I found a couple like that in SoCal and AZ when I was shopping around. In at least 3 of the cases, the dealers were planning to convert them into "TRD PRO's" by adding on the optional suspension, front grill, wheels, etc. They were by far the exception though. Most of the ORP were with moonroof and no KDSS, or with KDSS and moonroof.

The really fun thing was asking them about the wheels. 3-4 month backorder, which made me wonder how they were converting these into "TRD PRO". My guess was that the dealers had acquired them previously and had them set aside specifically for their builds, and were not going to part with the wheels for anything, unless you bought their new vehicle. Which makes sense as the mark-ups I saw were at least $5000 over the MSRP. The dealer I got my ORP from had looked into it and found the regional distro was holding on to a small number of the TRD PRO wheels for insurance claims.

Scumbags! I would say "no thanks," take that $5000 and make my rig WAY better than a TRD Pro. Essentially, what I'm doing now. :dance:

Agree. I'm sure at some point during the sale, they were being clear about the vehicle not being an official Pro model, as they had told me what their plans were for the vehicle. I doubt a dealer would want to stick their nose into that kind of legal trouble (false advertising, etc). For people just gunning for the look, they'd probably get the sale. Don't get me wrong, the Pro is pretty, but not THAT pretty. lol

I'm with you though. I'd rather put that kind of money elsewhere, into upgrades that I believe will be far more functional for what I intend.

It has a Trail hood, yet leather seats, but has trail rims, A-Trac, Sunroof.........I am trying to figure out what the actual Trim is. It looks like a trail because it seems to have a switch for e-lock diff.

aside from the refresh in 2014 and the renaming of the trail to offroad in 2017 have there been any changes within each trim level between years?

I would say YES. I know one small detail is that the clock/display has changed in later models. On mine (2014 TE) it shows Compass, Time, and a few other pieces of information but I believe on newer models its just a basic clock.

Forgive me I have owned my 4Runner only 20 days when you guys say "air pump" do you mean air compressor, we can adjust the PSI for our tires? I didn't know this was an option on my 2017 TRD Off Road, I had actually asked for one for Christmas. Can anyone tell me where in my 4Runner I would find this? does it work well or should I still go for an aftermarket? Again I feel silly asking this very basic question.

Air pump is for emissions and is not an air compressor like you're thinking. If you tell santa to nix the air compressor you'll be sorely disappointed. Lol

They could do dealer installed...just like Joe-schmoe down the street could cut a hole in your roof.

You want a "factory installed" moonroof. That means they did it in Japan.

Everyone knows its installed at the local YMCA by Catholic Priests doing community service work for those transgressions!:hatsoff:

Over the past month or so we have had quite the influx of either new 4Runner owners or those looking to purchase. With them in mind I wanted to start a thread listing the DIFFERENCES between models.

For example: A LE is the only model that you can get full time four wheel drive. A TE model is the only model with KDSS, etc. Some items shouldn't be listed as differences like wheels because wheels are easy to order and install across models. Skids are another item that is easy to change for example.
I think it would muddy the water so to speak if we broke it out in the "Premium" or "Non Premium" models so we will keep it at pretty much ANY major differences between the SR5, TE, TRD Pro and LE. This means you might have to buy the "Premium" edition of the model but you can get it with that model.
So to get it started with the basic differences between models:

2015 SR5
-Conventional Suspension
-Part time 4WD avaiable
-All standard features and convenience packages


2015 TE can have all features (or deletions) that can be had on a SR5 and
-KDSS Suspension
-Multi Mode 4WD controls
-Rear E Locker
-Hood Scoop
-Front and rear TE specific plastic cladding
-Lever actuated Automatic Disconnecting Differential instead of Electric Actuated.
-Contrasting seat stitching
-Interior trim cladding a darker color.
*Delete sunglass holder
*Delete 3rd Row Seating

2015 TRD Pro can have all the features (or deletions) that can be had on a TE and
-TRD Pro Conventional suspension
-Orange Paint Color
-TRD Pro Badging (includes the front grille sleeve and Toyota logo)
*Delete KDSS Suspension
*Delete Sunroof


2015 LE model can have all the features that can be had on the SR5 and
-Push button start
-LE specific body cladding
-XREAS Suspension
-Full Time 4WD available
-Auto Headlights
-Dual Automatic Climate Controls
-JBL Sound and Speakers
-Leather trimmed seating
-Ventilated seats
-Keyless Touch Entry
-Memory Driver's seat
-Wood grain Interior
-Powered Running Boards

These are options that would be either expensive or difficult to add unlike wheels or skids. What am I missing?

All - I know this is an old post but I think it is applicable. I'm considering buying a Limited in the range of 2015-New. I'm struggling to find the details of any options that may have been added or upgraded on the LE during that time period. I don't want to buy used and then realize that I'm missing something that I would have really liked in a newer model year. It looks like Entune came in 2016 (?) but is there anything else I'm missing other than special exterior colors?

i too find this helpful regardless how old the info is. i really wanted a limited for the features it has especially the different colored leather and push button start. but i also like trd-pro for its suspension and wheels.

i might end up with LE and just add the bumper and wheels :zoom:

I’m brand and hope I am asking this question in the right place not wasting anyone’s time. I have never owned a 4 runner and have been researching. I am looking to buy 2016 to 2018. Most of my usage will be day to day driving around Colorado. But will also do limited off road and pull on occasion a small trailer/Rpod. I would like some of the upgraded features like sunroof/premium sound system/leather etc which I believe means premium package? My biggest question is which type would be best for me. Is SR5 or limited enough or am I better to cover all bases with TRD? Sorry these questions very basic but any advise or suggestions where else to look would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, GlennG

SR5 is basic and an excellent platform to start from. Guys who know they will gut the truck to add custom suspension, gears, air lockers, and big tires usually start here because they're replacing everything anyway. It's also still a very capable truck right out of the box.

The OR has the same suspension with a few electronic goodies and traction aids added for off road. KDSS (an option) is analogous to an automatic swaybar disconnect system.

The Limited is full-time AWD with a lockable center diff (turning it into 4WD). It has hydraulically linked shocks (XREAS) to make the truck roll less on curvy roads. It is also the only 4Runner with push-button start and ventilated seats.

The Pro is the same thing as an OR, except with fancier shocks and you can't order a sunroof or KDSS.

Hopefully that can help you out. Also to add on to his post, the TRD OR/P has crawl control and multi terrain select, not sure if the TRD Pro comes with those. If you look at the product sheet for the 4Runner it should list what is standard and available as an option on each of the 4Runner models.

The Sunroof is not part of a premium package, you still need to add it on for the premium versions.

Thanks for all the info. I’ve been reading this site for couple hours and very useful... I think for my use the Limited is a good choice...mostly on road, moderate off road but some, pulling a 20 ft trailer occasional and I like all the upgrades like sound system etc. am I missing something... will I regret having TRD off road...thanks

The TRD OR, the suspension has been tuned to TRD specs, you get crawl control and multi terrain select, and part time 4WD (I may be wrong based on the below information). My advice is to verify what comes on the 4Runner and explain what you want to accomplish at the dealership. After getting their information, you can compare what they say to what you find/ask on the forums.

Pulled from the 2018 brochure:
