Trail has transmission skid plate I believe vs. SR5 and LE with none for trans. I may be wrong though.

Add in TRD PRO, and then you have a different shift knob, and TRD Skid. badging front grill.

TE, SR5, LE have different grills/color scheme and fascia. That may be something to break down as well.

Roof rails on Pro and TE have black endcaps..

How about parking sonars, I'm pretty sure Trail doesn't have it.

In the original post I said that I would add the major features per model but include the standard and premium features under one model so it did not get murky. For example if I wanted a TE I COULD get KDSS but I might have to get a TE premium.

I also included the badges under the TRD Pro. All badges.

Items like skid plates and wheels I did not include because they can be changed quickly across different models.

I just wanted to make a simple list for prospective 4runner buyers and even those that just purchased one. I would like to use this list to use as a link to that next new guy who asks in his first post what's the difference between models! I appreciate all the help so far.

I think a 2015 4Runner in any trim level is a bargain compared to the alternatives.

It is no secret that I want a PRO model, even though it is not going to happen. :dammit:

A limited with new tires/rims would be a nice new purchase for me.

A trail would not be my first choice. I don't go off-road on purpose. Lol.

I love my 2012 SR5. It is simply fantastic. It also has more fancy (things) than I NEED.

Timeline for my next puchase is the year 2020.

Since the header on each of the compared categories clearly states 2015, it is pretty obvious that he is showing the difference between the four different 2015 trims available.

It's the thread title that is misleading.

It implies a discussion of all 5th Gens and then you only see tables of 2015's listed. Not so obvious to those that don't know and they are the ones this thread is aimed at. Most people read threads because of the thread title.

Am I missing something. I had a 2012 SR5 and it had a button, RSCA (Roll Sensing Curtain Airbag), to disable the airbags from accidentally deploying at a specific angle. Now I have a 2015, I don't have the button and I can't find anything in the manual that refrences how to disable the airbags from accident going off.

Also with an SR5 P, TEP and Limited, you are mandated to have a sunroof, which uselessly reduces headroom.

The RSCA button is now eliminated. I think they added something automatic where it will only deploy in an actual roll over vs an extreme off camber situation. Good idea, because I often forget to hit the button. Luckily, never been over enough for it to deploy.

One thing to add, all 4wd sr5 and trail editions had a manual transfer case up until 2013 when they went to the knob. Also, good idea to explain it is just for the tcase. The axle (hub locking...) is still electronic via the ADD.

I still don't think most people understand what CRAWL, MTS, DAC, and ATRAC really do, so it might help to attempt to explain those features and denote what they all have in common and which models have what. MTS is still a bit mysterious to everyone, but the best explanation I have seen is less aggressive tuned modes of ATRAC that mostly only work in 4LO.

I don't know what an "SR5 Premium" is. As far as I know, current T4Rs come in three trims (+TRD) and each trim has a set of possible options.

It's certainly possible to get an SR5 without a sunroof, at least in the US.

Starting in 2014, the SR5 and TE models were (and are) offered in two sub models, ie: SR5 base and SR5 premium. The premium models include the sunroofs.

After re-reading the original post, Part-Time 4WD (for SR5) and Full-Time 4WD (for LE) would incorrectly appear to prospective buyers as default stock features. It would be clearer for new members to list these as "available" since they can always buy a 4x2 SR5 or LE, correct?

Over the past month or so we have had quite the influx of either new 4Runner owners or those looking to purchase. With them in mind I wanted to start a thread listing the DIFFERENCES between models.

For example: A LE is the only model that you can get full time four wheel drive. A TE model is the only model with KDSS, etc. Some items shouldn't be listed as differences like wheels because wheels are easy to order and install across models. Skids are another item that is easy to change for example.
I think it would muddy the water so to speak if we broke it out in the "Premium" or "Non Premium" models so we will keep it at pretty much ANY major differences between the SR5, TE, TRD Pro and LE. This means you might have to buy the "Premium" edition of the model but you can get it with that model.
So to get it started with the basic differences between models:

2015 SR5
-Conventional Suspension
-Part time 4WD
-All standard features and convenience packages


2015 TE can have all features (or deletions) that can be had on a SR5 and
-KDSS Suspension
-Multi Mode 4WD controls
-Rear E Locker
-Hood Scoop
-Front and rear TE specific plastic cladding
-Lever actuated Automatic Disconnecting Differential instead of Electric Actuated.
-Contrasting seat stitching
-Interior trim cladding a darker color.
*Delete sunglass holder
*Delete 3rd Row Seating

2015 TRD Pro can have all the features (or deletions) that can be had on a TE and
-TRD Pro Conventional suspension
-Orange Paint Color
-TRD Pro Badging (includes the front grille sleeve and Toyota logo)
*Delete KDSS Suspension
*Delete Sunroof


2015 LE model can have all the features that can be had on the SR5 and
-Push button start
-LE specific body cladding
-XREAS Suspension
-Full Time 4WD
-Auto Headlights
-Dual Automatic Climate Controls
-JBL Sound and Speakers
-Leather trimmed seating
-Ventilated seats
-Keyless Touch Entry
-Memory Driver's seat
-Wood grain Interior
-Powered Running Boards

These are options that would be either expensive or difficult to add unlike wheels or skids. What am I missing?

Alrighty now! I sold my '97 back in '13 and got a new/used Tundra. I'm giving that to the man and getting a new T4R.

I've read everything here. What in wanting to know is if there are any regional submodels? (The Tundra has SR5, Limited, base... But also, at least in the SE, there's a Texas Edition and a louisiana Edition.)

Is there anything like that out there? I am finding that regionally (SE) many dealers are only sticking certain options when I look at inventory in say, California, there's differing option packages.

Anyone know anything?

The Texas and other packages are something dealers cook up. The reason you see regional differences is that marketing has determined what will sell best in specific areas. You can only get those options in those regions so if you want something specific you have to travel there to get it.

the TE has a lever-actuated transfer case :driving:
the SR5 has an electronic (dial) actuator.
the ADD is electronic on both the TE and SR5.
