5th Gen Features/Models/Differences

Over the past month or so we have had quite the influx of either new 4Runner owners or those looking to purchase. With them in mind I wanted to start a thread listing the DIFFERENCES between models.

For example: A LE is the only model that you can get full time four wheel drive. A TE model is the only model with KDSS, etc. Some items shouldn't be listed as differences like wheels because wheels are easy to order and install across models. Skids are another item that is easy to change for example.
I think it would muddy the water so to speak if we broke it out in the "Premium" or "Non Premium" models so we will keep it at pretty much ANY major differences between the SR5, TE, TRD Pro and LE. This means you might have to buy the "Premium" edition of the model but you can get it with that model.
So to get it started with the basic differences between models:

2015 SR5
-Conventional Suspension
-Part time 4WD avaiable
-All standard features and convenience packages


2015 TE can have all features (or deletions) that can be had on a SR5 and
-KDSS Suspension
-Multi Mode 4WD controls
-Rear E Locker
-Hood Scoop
-Front and rear TE specific plastic cladding
-Lever actuated Automatic Disconnecting Differential instead of Electric Actuated.
-Contrasting seat stitching
-Interior trim cladding a darker color.
*Delete sunglass holder
*Delete 3rd Row Seating

2015 TRD Pro can have all the features (or deletions) that can be had on a TE and
-TRD Pro Conventional suspension
-Orange Paint Color
-TRD Pro Badging (includes the front grille sleeve and Toyota logo)
*Delete KDSS Suspension
*Delete Sunroof


2015 LE model can have all the features that can be had on the SR5 and
-Push button start
-LE specific body cladding
-XREAS Suspension
-Full Time 4WD available
-Auto Headlights
-Dual Automatic Climate Controls
-JBL Sound and Speakers
-Leather trimmed seating
-Ventilated seats
-Keyless Touch Entry
-Memory Driver's seat
-Wood grain Interior
-Powered Running Boards

These are options that would be either expensive or difficult to add unlike wheels or skids. What am I missing?

Whats the diff between Part time 4WD on my Trail Premium vs Full time 4WD on limited edition?


is one better than other?

Huh? where did you see that? From the link above under the optional features for the Limited

"Leather-trimmed 50/50 split fold-flat third-row seat and sliding
second row with passenger-side one-touch access to third row"

When I was looking for one in December, more than half of the Limited models seemed to have third row seats which is something I didn't want. You can't get a third row seat on a Trail or a Pro.

hmm, wasn't that hard with my dealer. put in my allocation request, selected my packages (NONE, there is only 3rd row and auto running boards) and options, and 2 months later had my new LE.

hardest part is finding a dealer willing to put in an allocation request for what you want, not what they have on lot or within decent dealer swap range.

edit: my sig shows what I bought, just a standard LE with only the stated options added. NO 3rd row or automatic running boards.

Regional buys

This thread had a lot of posts about finding a 4runner in a different region. ....I just wanted to point out that you can always place a special order for the 4runner of your dreams. ..... it will take 60-90 days before you get it. .... and it has to be a new order (not used).... but it is doable.
 
When did that thing that sticks out over the back window start?

I don't know that name of that piece of metal/trim/ thing that sticks out
over the top of the back window is so its hard to ask about it.
I don't like it and was wondering what model year it started.
I dont want to buy too old a year yet don't want that thing either.


The 4Runner is already tall for me. Trying to get a kayak up there
is going to be hard. Currently on my S10 Blazer I have a roller kayak system but I start with leaing the kayak on the back hatch/roof line, lifting up the bottom so the whole weight of the kayak is the car and sliding it up.
That fin thing is in the way! Looks like I'm going to have to consider giving up 4wd.

I believe you are talking about the spoiler above the window. It houses the rear wiper.

- Since you're posting in the 5th gen forum, I assume this is what you inquire about. The 5G began in 2010. Every model has this spoiler, not an option, nor can I imagine removing it with any success.

- Not sure what connection you imply with 4WD ... even 2WD models will have the spoiler.

- As suggested by [MENTION=112177]4RnR Grl[/MENTION] , if you're going to purchase any 5G 4R, you'll have to find a way to deal with the spoiler.

1990 was when they started putting them on, but not on every 4runner. That didn't start until 2010.

I already have a hully roller system. That spoiler would still be in the way.
IMO its a stupid thing, I don't ever use my rear wiper anyway but nothing I can do about it.

So I'd have to back to a 2009.

I find it interesting that you are choosing your vehicle around a rack system rather than the other way around. Must be a very special rack.

Actually what is interesting, is that you feel obliged to say something about a feature on a 4Runner that appears to not even be your concern. Perhaps he requires the frequent use of a kayak for work or maybe it's his weekend hobby. Again, should not matter to you...You can be certain that if I was looking for a vehicle, it would at the minimum be able to facilitate my weekend hobbies and the accessories that come with it.
