Actually what is interesting, is that you feel obliged to say something about a feature on a 4Runner that appears to not even be your concern. Perhaps he requires the frequent use of a kayak for work or maybe it's his weekend hobby. Again, should not matter to you...You can be certain that if I was looking for a vehicle, it would at the minimum be able to facilitate my weekend hobbies and the accessories that come with it.
Logic: There are several racks and loading systems out there for Kayaks and Canoes. There are very few BOF SUV's. One costs a few grand, the other costs $35-$45 grand. IMO his logic is similar to the guy that buys a house to fit a refrigerator.
With that said it has been explained to him that the rear "spoiler" (it's not that but it's a name) is an integral part of the vehicle and houses the rear wiper assembly. The guy then responded that he does not even use his rear wiper ever. ???
Now, forget for a second that a few quick and easy and cheap modifications to the rack would let him use his existing loading apparatus even with the rear wiper housing. It has been done before, several times in fact.
IMO the guy was just looking for any reason he could find NOT to get a 4Runner. His logic was suspect to say the least. My .02.
