My neighbor has a 16. Other than no off road ability it is a much easier, smoother, quieter, quicker drive for normal use though.

I think she's a toyota sponsored athlete and probably got that thing for free. I wish my wife got a PRO for free.

Yeah, can't argue that. I didn't buy my 4R for speed though. The OEM suspension sucks, very happy with my upgrades. Yeah I get 15 MPG but I did that to myself. For me, the 4R is well worth everything it offers. Now with that said, my wife likes the Highlander and I would have no issue buying her one.
Happen to know what engine and transmission is in the 2018?

That was my experience as well....kept it for a couple of years but just couldn't get over those issues. Ended up trading on an '18 T4R OR.
I wish that Toyota would have carried the gauge cluster from the Taco over to the 4runner.
I agree about the gauge cluster. I miss the additional options on the Gen 3 Tacoma. But I really don’t miss that cluster lens. That thing scratches so easily and it is angled just perfectly so you see all the scratches.

If you actually read the interview, it's clear that the 4Runner will continue. They explicitly discuss how the 4Runner and Highlander are very similar in size but have completely different markets. They went on to say that they are adding a new smaller body-on-frame SUV, and may consider chopping and Sequoia. It's nonsensical to think that they would drop the 4Runner in the current market. When you look at sales of other products like the Jeep Wrangler, the introduction of a new Bronco, the return of the Xterra. The 4Runner is perfectly positioned in a growing Market.
Just for a little perspective, the entire Lexus brand sells about 300,000 vehicles per year. The 4Runner currently is selling about 130000. It's not going anywhere. You can take that to the bank.

Totally don't care. Just bought a 2018 BOF with a bullet proof 4.0. 5th gen has been in production for 8 years now with one refresh. Parts will be available for the rest of my life. So as long as I don't total it and as long as it doesn't get stolen I am good. This runner will do everything I want to do for as long as I want to do it.:rockon:

I don’t think there will be a 6th generation for a good while. It’s a lot more likely that Toyota will do another facelift for 2019. For clues, look at what the Prado got in 2018: nicer dashboard, new grille, and safety features... boom, you have a ‘fresh’ 4Runner for 3 more years. By then, they will have a proper redesign, with new engine and powertrain, new tech, etc.
I could be wrong, but it’s just too easy and cheap to execute another facelift: the Prado and the 4runner are essentially the same truck and we now know that the new Prado in its current form isn’t going anywhere for at least 2-3 years. And by the way, I see no problem in making the TRD-Pro lag for one year, so the fact that they announced a 2019 TRD Pro that looks virtually unchanged doesn’t mean the standard 2019 4runner will be a carryover.

The actual type of platform is NOT going anywhere because it's one of the most popular around the world. The only legitimate question is what will be available in the US.
For example, I think the FJ was made on the same production line as the 4R but they added a outsourced body near the end of the process. They stopped selling them to the US but still sold them to AU.
So my guess is that if US sales numbers remain strong and the EPA doesn't go full retard they will continue a version of the platform for us. Either way, the Tahara plant will continue making it for a very loooooonge time.

We looked at the FJ and settled on the 4Runner. You give up nothing in performance with the 4Runner, yet grab a ton more space and function without the stupid suicide doors and blind spots.

Great point and I guess this is the right time to disclose that we also have a 2017 Highlander LE and the wife loves it.
She drove a 2000 4runner SR5 before that for 275k miles.

The PRO is not a different model, it's just an appearance package on a Trail/OffRoad 4Runner. No way it will be a carryover. I think the 4 will be new or newer in 2020 and I think it will be a hybrid or have some type of electric assist to improve efficiency. The CAFE standards are forcing this. Here is some speculation for you, I think Toyota will implement Prius tech on all their trucks.

That well may be. I think it actually makes sense to have some degree of hybrid technology on trucks (i believe FCA is going strong on this). The caveat is the timeframe. I very much doubt Toyota has anything ready within a couple of years for the 4runner. There are 2 reasons. First, they would probably deploy new technology/platform on the higher margin models (i.e. Land Cruiser 200 and Tundra). Second, why would they introduce a facelifted global Prado if they plan to change the whole platform in 2 years? I think the 6th generation (along with the next Prado) will arrive not earlier than 2022. I read somewhere that the Tundra and Land Cruiser will arrive in 2020 or 2021. That should give us a good hint of what they intend for all their trucks.
My money is on a facelifted 4runner in 2019.

People who rode around in child seats in a 4th gen will be old enough to drive and even BUY the 6th generation which would share the same architecture and even maybe the same damn engine.

I have a feeling they're just testing out that atkinson cycle 3.5 crap on the Tacoma to perfect it for the 6th gen since they know that Tacoma buyers will buy total crap as long as it has that name. Toyota heritage bro
