5th Gen overhead molle panel

My speaker is built into my radio - I only own portable ones. I would not hard mount one - or want a hard mounted one. It's kinda hard to take out hiking, spotting, etc. Much like I wouldn't hard mount my cell phone. I'm not totally sure why people still do that - but I see people with them hard mounted. Even with a hard mount - wouldn't you normally connect them to your regular speakers either via bluetooth or through the aux input options? Every radio I've ever had installed in a work truck has been done that way.

Mine also came with a garage door opener (homelink). Don't they all?

My first aid kit is way too big to fit up there. Also why obstruct your vision with something that could easily be stored in the back?

Maybe I could velcro a bundle of slim jims up there?
 
I understand the appeal of having things mounted up there for ease of access. What I can't understand is why someone would mount something over their head that could cause a serious injury in the event of a rollover or seat belt failure. This just seems so short-sighted.

speakers on radios are universally terrible and too quiet when the body is remotely mounted, there no way i could hear mine under the seat. (and HT radios have a major antenna and power disadvantage, mobile is way better)

using aux-in or bluetooth is a bad solution because you can't listen to anything else while monitoring the radio

trail models don't have homelink

i said trauma kit not first aid, if your trauma kit is not in easy reach it's pretty worthless if you or your passenger needs to self-rescue in an accident. I would need to hold my kit up there to be sure but I don't think it should obstruct visibility, or at the very least a tourniquet would not.

Lots of vehicles have stock large over head consoles that go all the way back to the rear of the front seats. The aftermarket also make a lot of them for land cruisers and other aussie trucks.

Speakers built into units (especially the hand held corded mics) are terribly quiet. Homelink stopped being standard after 2010-2013 models. I dont even know if it's on the premiums anymore. I had it on my 10 sr5 but not on my 16 trail.

Most professional radio installs interrupt the car's own radio. Just like the maps do over the music. I think the BT aux input would probably require a choice of one or the other. Is that better or worse than having extra speakers mounted on a molle rack?

Trail premium models have homelink. I didn't realize they had removed it from the base trail and base SR5 models from '14 on. Either way - they fit in a key fob. I'm not sure I need a rack up there to hold my key fob. I usually put it on the roof rack when it's in the way.

I think the idea of self rescue from a trauma kit is pretty silly honestly. If it makes you feel better - go for it. But it's about as likely to be useful as having a radar installed to avoid incoming meteorites. And the rack is FAR more dangerous to have there, than it would be to not have a rag available wrap your head wound from the rack.

I am glad though to hear that auto accidents or other traumatic accidents don't happen where you live

4Runners are very safe. Putting a big piece of metal near your head to hold your gear is not making it safer. Even if the gear it intended to help you manage the injuries caused by the rack to hold the gear.

I'd throw it away if it was OEM. I guess one man's trash is another man's treasure.

I'm just a lonely bystander but based on where it mounts I don't see why it wouldn't work with a sunroof...other than the obvious part where it will physically block some of the sunroof. I believe the roof console location / dimensions are the same whether you have a sunroof or not. If I'm wrong someone let me know.
 
I tried a mockup on mine and its too low when I have the seat raised. I wish the panel was tight to the roof, then it would be no issue for me.
