5th Gen Rock Lights - Show us pics of install location...

I will be installing rock lights on my 5th Gen TEP this week/weekend. However, I came to the conclusion that mounting in certain positions could be less advantageous than others. I am only doing 4 lights (1 per wheel). My objective is to see the inside surface of the wheel where it contacts the ground (or doesn't). Of course, anything else I can see with these lights would be nice. The secondary objective is to use these as ambient lights when camping.

So, show us how you did it!!! Let us know what you like or dislike about the placement.
Any vehicle pics are welcomed, but I am mostly interested in the positioning of these lights on a 5th Gen 4Runner.

I have to second this. After a Rig recovery that went well into the night, I realize I "need" rock lights. It's far safer then spotting someone with a flashlight.

Exactly. It doesn't matter how many flashlights you have - if you miss that one hole, rock, mud slick, sharp object, or whatever while trying to crawl out of something; your night/evening can get infinitely more interesting in a very fast manner. Having been stuck in the snow in New Mexico in my 2003 in the middle of the night, rock lights would have been extremely helpful and probably saved a tire. :frusty:

LawnDart looks to have 2 lights per wheel?

I'd say try mounting them and see how you like them before finalizing the wiring. Great thing about our 4runner is there's so many locations with factory threads to bolt onto.

I took a quick peek at your instagram and I'm assuming you don't have any aftermarket bumpers, correct?

For me, I mounted six rock lights...but they are all mounted to aftermarket parts. The front corners are mounted into the corner of my front Hefty fab bumper. I have rock sliders that have a plated rear kickout. I was able to mount those rock lights under the plate, so it is tucked up high enough where it won't get smashed. I guess a well-positioned rock could smash it, but I'll deal with that if it happens. The rear corners are mounted to the round support bar for my CBI bumper. Same thing here...tucked up high enough where it shouldn't get smashed from a low departure angle, but could still happen I suppose.

I wired them up like Christmas tree lights, so if one does gets damaged the rest will still work. I can get pictures later today.

You are correct - stock bumpers. I will eventually go with a low profile front with a hidden winch mount. I am working with [MENTION=139789]RagoFabrication[/MENTION] on sliders. I hope to have those by the end of July (they are in R&D phase right now).

The Rock Light Kit I am working with has a 4 point independently wired system and RGB with bluetooth controls. If one gets smashed, the rest should work just fine. I hadn't thought about mounting to the sliders.

I use the Rigid Ignites, even though I'm primarily Baja Designs on my truck. Even BD admits the mounting setup on the Rigid Ignites are cool because they use GoPro mounts.

As a result this means that the 3M VHB tape bases are ridiculously adaptable in placement. I have 2 in front of each wheel, 2 in back, and 2 where the spare tire used to be that provides light behind the rear wheels.

I started with 5, but ended up adding another 3 when I realized I wanted to illuminate the entire underside when camping or on the trail at night.

It's not cheap I know, but the Ignites are nice because mounting them is as easy as cleaning off the spot with some denatured alcohol, and putting the gopro base on.

I'll try to get photos but basically they're in front of the front wheels inside the pelfrey bumper, under each slider protected by the frame pointing down at a 45, at the back pointing down 45, and then I mounted 2 angled out and down on the charcoal filter unit near where the spare used to be.

Here are some pics of my rock light locations. 6 total, cheapies from Amazon, wired up to an AOB switch. You can see how the fronts are pretty well protected by this wing that comes out on the Hefty fab bumper's bottom corners. The rock rails would need a special rock to hit them...but I guess it could happen. Rears are probably the most vulnerable, but would still need me to go off a decent sized drop off, hit a large rock, or back down into something. If it happens...oh well...they were cheap!

Has anybody set these up to be cornering lights as well? My crappy headlights and A-pillar location make (left especially) turns in total darkness a little dicey, and would love to have them wired for "steady-on" to the turn signals...thoughts?
