5th Gen Stock Height Biggest Tire Size

Okay I am new to the Toyota world. I just bought a 2011 4runner SR5, love it. However it needs new tires. I would like to go as big as possible with out rubbing and no level kit. I off road a lot and live in Utah so I make frequent trips to Moab. I just went to the tire store and they said I can fit a 275/65R18 without rubbing. I am looking at getting new wheels and upgrading to a 18 inch size. I'm leaning very heavily to the Wrangler Duratrac tires in this size. My question... is there anyone running this set up? If so does it rub? When looking at the store the tire looked huge and the worker said his guess is that it would rub, the computer says otherwise. Or am I best to do a level kit? If so which one? My other option is staying with a 18inch wheel and doing the nitto at's in a 285/60R-18 i'm 99% sure these will clear no problem. Seem like ok tires and look just a slight bigger then stock. I just got back from Discount Tire to discuss tire sizes as well for my LE. I've got a set of 18" 4th Gen wheels arriving Friday. They told me the 275/65/18 should fit so this is what I intend to put on. They said they would obviously change the size if there is any rubbing.

When I went to discounts they said they have a sale this weekend for $100 off for labor day. I'm trying to get it ordered and taken care of before them. The 275-65-18 look huge! I will be really surprised if they don't rub.

If you off road a lot why would you want to go up to an 18" wheel and lose the extra sidewall?

I think there are other threads about largest tire size you can fit, but make sure to consider whether the people running those larger tires are only running them on pavement or off road. The bigger tires may not rub on the way into the Walmart parking lot, but there's a good chance they will when you're at full stuff on the trail.

That puts you around 32.1" diameter and a 9.2" tread width on a BFG All-Terrain. That's a similar diameter to a 275/70/17, but about .8" wider. So the folks who mentioned off-roading are correct about the gotcha being when you hit the dirt.

Totally agree with you. My truck is used for work and spends about 99% of its time on the pavement so I'm not concerned about losing the extra sidewall.

Well, you're actually gaining sidewall by going from 20's to 18's on the LE. My post was actually directed at the OP going from 17's to 18's on the SR5.

I went to an 18 x 8.5 wheel and 275/65/18. Stock ride height. I have slit rubbing at certain tight turns and corning. Nothing to worry about, but if I were to do it again I would have gone with the 265/65/18. IMO

I'm not understanding this. If one tire is 265/70/17 and another is 265/70/18, both tires have the same sidewall height to tread-width ratio, wouldn't they? So how is sidewall being lost?

Those two tires would not be the same size. The 17 would be 31.6" overall diameter and the 18 would be 32.6" overall diameter. The width and sidewall would be the same though.

A 285/70/17 would be about the same diameter as a 265/70/18 (32.7" vs. 32.6") but the 285/70/17 has more sidewall and is wider.

I have 275/65/18 and no rubbing and have had zero issues on the trails. Than again I, not doing anything crazy, moderate off roaring, no problem. You will def notice a hit on the gas millage though. I'm happy so far, 25k on ,y coopers and they look brand new, noise went up just a little, you have to pay attention to hear it though.

I've had great luck with BFG so I'd probably go with the AT. I've got 50,000 on a set on an Xterra and still solid. I thought about the Goodyear Duratracs but they only come in a 285 and I don't want to deal with rub. This is the wife's daily driver and I don't want to hear about rub.

I'm throwing on 18x9 ultra gauntlets with 275/65/18 toyo AT2. Keeping it stock height. We will see how she rides. Hoping for no rubbing ( it will piss the wife off). But it sounds like i should be ok. Doesn't see much off road except for maybe logging roads. Let ya boys know and i'll get some pics up.
