5th gen to 4th gen?

Hey guys!
Throwing around the idea of adding a 4th gen to the family and I'm wondering what major differences I will be seeing? What should I be looking for when buying used?

I'm mainly looking for a 2005-2008 V8 limited 4wd ( which are tough to find!)

I know timing belt and water pump is a must around 100k miles but other then general maintenance anything else major? How many miles do you think are too many?

Thanks!

If doable (cash) look for 08-9 V8 these had all the bells & rear lockers so .........what I'm currently looking for to replace son's 05 !

Figure out how you want the back storage to be.. done have the shelf, some are flat and done have a 3rd row..

I did not know that..... Would certainly be nice although I've only used my locker once on my trail ( just to try it ) but I like the option of having it

I think the only 4th gen that had a rear locker was the 09 Trail Edition, which I believe are all V6, and very rare. The 08-09 did make side curtain air bags standard though.

That's what we bought our 08 for.. side curtain airbags.. safety for the kiddos..

Call up the dealership with the VIN like you would any purchase and check for recalls

Another issue to check is the exhaust manifold leak which ends up being a ticking noise. One of my manifolds ticks a bit when the engine is cold but it goes away when the engine is warm. It doesn't affect performance but no sense in buying a vehicle with a cracked manifold.

Thankfully there are now aftermarket headers and a midpipe available and i'll be buying those in the next year or 2

Think I test drove a sequoia that had that issue....I thought it was a timing issue but could have been the manifold as well.

I would avoid the V8s. I currently own one and have had many more issues with the V8 than I have had with any of my V6s.

V8 watch out for:
Exhaust Manifold leak/cracks: $1500/per side to fix
2ndary Air induction pump: Emissions related : $2500 to fix
Timing belt/water pump every 90k: $1000

I was/am very happy with my V6 models. I will not purchase another Toyota V8.

With all of the 4wd 4th gens, you need to make sure that none of the actuators are stuck from disuse. Lots of 4wd owners never really use their system and the electric actuator can seize up. For the V8, this will affect the ability to go into 4LO or to lock the center diff so make sure you test these modes before you buy. It can be expensive to fix if they are well and truly seized.
