Mileage doesn't matter very much with the 4Runner.
Pricing is always going to be set on demand. What you are seeing does not fit the traditional, JeepChevyFordDodge model but it does fit the ToyotaHonda model.
Seems more like wishful thinking. Why would anyone buy a 4 year old vehicle when you can get a near new one for the same price? Looks like the 4 runner loses 25% in the first year and then not much?

25% the first year? I don't think so. By that math my $40K TE that is one year old with 4800 miles is worth $30K?
Not happening. 4Runners here in Colorado that are clean sell for very close to a comparable new one. Trail Editions are worth their weight in gold here.
Search for "2015 toyota 4runner trail for sale". You will not find one for sale lower than $2K under new cost, if that.
And... You aren't going to find a decent 2015 for even remotely close to $30K, even a stripped model.

That was my thinking exactly when I was in the market for a CPO or lightly used 4Runner. There weren't a lot of sale and the ones that were for sale were asking close to the new price. With 2 yrs of Toyota Care included on a new one, it was worth the extra $2-4k to get what I wanted rather than settle.
But if you want to have a killer built rig, the 4th gens are great bargains and leave a good amount of coin in your wallet to build a beast!

Maybe bare bones SR5.
I saw a 2015 SR5 locally here with nearly 50k miles for 30k. You have to remember, the SR5 has a much lower MSRP and can probably be bought new for 33-34k.

I did an Autotrader search for the entire United States.
Sixty Three 2015 4Runners under $30K and every single one of them are stripped SR5's AND rental cars/fleet vehicles OR accident vehicles. And every single one is priced at $29500 to $29,999.
So sure, you can get an el strippo SR5 that was a fleet vehicle for a year for $30K. You ever rent a vehicle? Sorry, but they get beat to hell and if that is worth saving a couple grand to you, go for it. ;-)

There you go. 63 is not, "not going to happen". There is no such thing as a stripped vehicle anymore. What other options would I even want after 4x4 and 3rd row? They all come with ac, power everything, most have nav. Most are one owner by the way. Again, it is odd that I can, and will get a low mile 2015, over a 2011 with double the miles for about $2k less. Even a rental car will have less ware in 1 year than a babied 2011 imo.

I've considered selling my Trail lately. Used Trail Premium with KDSS are a going for $34-$35k. When I bought mine there was one at the Subaru dealer listed for more than new prices. I asked if they had a more realistic price. The salesman said "nope, we think it's a fair price." Sure enough they sold it within about a week. I only paid $37 a year and a half ago. With a hidden winch, sliders, Fox 2.5s, I'd probably list close to what I bought for. I'm afraid I'd get it.
There's a nice clean white GX460 premium near me with 50k miles for $31k. I'm struggling not to list my 4runner, buy the GX toss some lockers in it, same suspension, and break even on the trade. There's a reason I didn't buy one initially, but it's hard not to do it.

So my 8 month old 2015 TP with 6300 miles is a valuable commodity? Not that I am going to sell it, but, the new Tacomas really look good...just thinking.
I started my search for a new vehicle more than a year ago, started with the FJ, then looked at the Tundras, the Tacomas for a long time. Every time a sky silver Tundra goes by I just stare at it...around here junk looking 4Runners go for $20K. And you very rarely see any used ones available.

Thanks to the crappy Canadian dollar, I've half thought of selling my 4Runner stateside. The buyer would probably save a few grand and I'd make a few grand back on the exchange.
Even if I sold locally... the re-sale if quite impressive. I'm probably looking at about $400/month (including taxes not just purchase price) for the last 3 years of ownership. Could barely finance an econobox for that. On a bad day, I'm probably at $500/month.

The op obviously does not understand the differences of 4 runner models. He's comparing the price of new loaded 4runners (trail/limited/pro/etc.) with used base SR5 models to arrive at the 25% depreciation rate he thinks he's seeing.
And, a base SR5 can have 4x4, a/c, heated mirrors, BT stereos, etc. Toyota doesn't strip their vehicles down to bare bones, they are not a no-frills manufacturer, so you will still get a lot with a "base" model. Yet, stepping up to a limited or Trail adds a LOT more extras on, its what makes toyota stand out from a lot of other manufacturers.
I'm also willing to bet that you've never owned a toyota before, and have no idea about how they hold their value. I'd also be willing to bet that you have been a Dodge/Chevy/Ford guy for years, and are used to the way their vehicles depreciate.
Toyotas hold way more of their value than any american car, its just the way it is. Been like this for many, many years. If you're not comfortable in spending that kind of money on a toyota, its totally fine to go back to american vehicles, perhaps you will be more comfortable with the numbers on one of them.

Resale value on the T4R is why I'd never buy one used, unless it was several years old with high mileage. Dealers around here sell 2-3 year old 4Runners for the same price I can buy a new one with some light negotiating. Makes no sense to me why anyone would be a a few year old T4R under those circumstances. Plus, you usually get better financing on a new purchase.
