There you go. 63 is not, "not going to happen". There is no such thing as a stripped vehicle anymore. What other options would I even want after 4x4 and 3rd row? They all come with ac, power everything, most have nav. Most are one owner by the way. Again, it is odd that I can, and will get a low mile 2015, over a 2011 with double the miles for about $2k less. Even a rental car will have less ware in 1 year than a babied 2011 imo.

There are a couple things you are leaving out.

First - 3rd row seats are not the norm. Those of us in the know on this vehicle know they are pretty much useless except for small kids or your backpack. But, they do add $716 INVOICE to the cost. I'm not going to search every one of those 63 4Runners, but doubtful many have the 3rd row seat, if any.

Second - all 63 of those vehicles I listed are just under the $30K mark, mostly by a few dollars so that people see $29,999 and go "Well, its under $30K". It's like gas priced @ $249.9 Its not two fifty a gallon right?

Third - if that works for you go for it. But.... remember, a rental car has not had one owner. They have had dozens if not hundreds of owners, 2-7 days at a time and none of which cared a rats behind about the vehicle.

In fact I would argue that 50% of the people that rent a vehicle beat the piss out of them. Especially if they hate the vehicle (not saying that would be the case with the 4Runner most of the time, but...).

I got stuck with a POS Nissan CVT rental car a few months back and absolutely hated that car. But hey, maybe redlining a motor for hours at a time because the stupid CVT transmission only has "1" and normal is good for it.

like someone else posted, this is the reason i bought mine new in 2015. i'm new to toyota's but know and saw how well they hold their value. made no sense for me to spend countless hours searching for the used truck with the options i wanted versus paying slightly more for the exact one with no miles/previous owners and get free service for 2 years.

The 4Runner retains 70% of it's list price after three years. It is one of the highest residual value vehicles out there.

Yes, there is such a thing as a low optioned vehicle. My SR5 Premium does not have cooled seats nor does it have a JBL sound system or dual climate control or KDSS or XREAS suspension or Bilstein shocks or many other things. It has a lot of stuff but there are other 4Runners that have much more.

You think a one year old rental car will have less wear than a four year old babied vehicle? Have you ever rented a car? I unfortunately have to rent them often and personally I would never ever buy a rental. I drive them like I stole them and most others I know do the same. Curb? No problem. Pot holes? Hit em at full speed. Brake torque check at stop light? Every time. Just because they look good does not mean they are good.

I looked at used 4Runners and saw that I could get a brand new one for just a little bit more scratch. I bought a new one, but then again, it's my money.

Main thing is to make sure YOU are happy with whatever deal you get.

Yep. When I was a kid my uncles wife's family owned the Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge dealership in a small town.

They used to come out to Denver to buy fleet vehicles at the auction and then ship them back to the small town and turn a little profit on each. You know, $200 here, $200 there, pretty soon it's $10K a month (which back then was a lot of scratch).

I still remember hearing my uncle say (and this was a guy who owned a new Mopar musclecar every 6 months and beat the shit out of them) that one thousand miles on a rental car equated to ten thousand miles on a privately owned car.

That was their formula when the bid on cars. 3k on the clock of a rental equaled 30K on a private vehicle. When you think about that, for the cars at that time, it's basically saying a rental car was junk at 20K miles.

It's also the reason 60's and 70's muscle cars are so rare today. Guys like my uncle, who got any Mopar he wanted at cost, bought them and beat the living crap out of them and then sold them to the next guy who beat the crap out of them and well, let's just say most musclecars lived a very hard life and died before reaching adulthood.

But as far as modern fleet vehicles go. I agree 100%. Odd's are just about every rental car has been beat into the ground. People will do things to a rental they would never do to their own vehicle.

Hell, it's even common knowledge here that people will rent cars/trucks, swap out the drive tires and take them to Bandimere for the burnout contest. That nice little ex-rental Mustang or GMC pickup or Focus you are looking at??? LOL - Surprise, it might have won the burnout contest in it's class at your local dragstrip.

Funny story on the rental car subject: back in college, a buddy of mine got a ford focus rental car for about a week while his car was in the shop for a warranty repair. One day we were driving by an empty field and saw some guys on dirt bikes And decided to take the focus off-roading. Later that same day we found a culdesac in a new subdivision under construction and did some ebrake drifting, after that we took it on the highway and did some ebrake pulls at 70mph to see how much smoke we could create... A few days after he turned the car in, he got a call from the rental company asking if he recalled if the car had a bumpy ride bc some customers were complaining it had a bumpy ride. Lol I guess we flat spotted the tires.

Back on the main subject, you're not going to find much difference in used/new prices on toyota trucks and suv's. Then when you factor in finance charges (if you're financing it) you may find it cheaper in the long run to buy a new one and get a lower interest rate.

There are deals to be had. I bought my 2011 TE w/KDSS last summer for $26k. It had a bit over 60k miles at the time. Financing was 2.2%.

Since there seem to be a lot of people stating that they don't think it's worth it to buy used I'll share my opinion. I didn't want to go over 30k. One year ago I found my 4runner which is a 2012 SR5, 4x4, third row seats, single owner, full proper service records, 40k miles. I ended up paying about $31k including taxes and fees and everything. I think it was a fair price and it was already a stretch above what I wanted to pay so any additional stretch to buy a new one did not seem reasonable at the time. No regrets since then and I love my 4runner.

Where I'm from taxes are the same for new or used. It's even better for new vehicles if you trade in your old one.

Example:
New Vehicle Price is 34,000
Your Trade is 14,000
You only pay tax on the balance of 20,000.


Used Vehicle price is 30,000
Your trade is 14,000
You pay full tax on the 30,000

Taxes here, would be about $7-800 more for the used vehicle.

My 4Runner is my 2nd car. (although i'm starting to drive it most days because i love it)... BUT I fully planned on buying a used trail when i started looking, but they were very hard to find and the prices were so close to new I just bought a brand new one with everything I wanted.

I saw plenty of those demo SR5s around $30k but never gave them a 2nd thought. Some people are willing to trade savings now for problems later, but not me.

I think most of the pricing differences can be explained by wishful thinking by the seller. When I was shopping for a TE, most for sale were modded and asking more than the new price. Of course they never got that. Don't assume that people price thinks rationally, and they often justify their prices by comparing to other advertised high prices. They never look at the actual transaction price. Also, I noticed that limiteds regularly sold for less than TEs. Luxury depreciation can even affect 4runners.

Yes - I noticed the exact same. If you are in the market for a limited, there are lots of used ones at good prices. Every time i went to look at a used trail there were 3-4 used limiteds that they tried to sell me, but I wasn't interested in that package. The only thing I wanted from a limited is automatic temperature control.

This may be the case for a GM or ford, but not 4 runners. A 4Runner with 50k on it will probably be in the car crusher at about the same time as a new one.

Arugment for Used

I guess I'm going to resurrect this thread a year later. in the spring/summer of 2018 I'm going to look at buying a used t4r. I do not intend on doing any heavy off-roading so a SR5 may be fine but I like the way the Trail or TRD off road looks. My target years are lower mileage 2015 or 2016s. where I am located in central Mass there are a lot of them for sale.

I get the argument that the new ones are close in price to the used ones but in my case the taxes (particularly) the local excise on a new can be considerably high. Also there is what I call buyer's price creep and I am guilty of it. Its starts like this I want to buy a used 2015 to 2015 Tacoma for 26 to 27K. Wifie does not like the PU but likes the t4r. So I say ok we can get a used one for a few grand more i.e. 28 to 30K. I see a SR5 for 29,900K with 15,000 miles but there's a really sweet 2015 Trail for 32k with 30,000 miles maybe I want that? So I talk to a dealership and they will get me out the door for a new base 2017 SR5 for about 35K. At this point I am $9K over my low end Tacoma price. Yes the new 2017 SR5 is only 3K more than the used 2015Trail but its way above what I wanted to spend. Bottom line I am going to try to get the best deal I can for 30K and I expect it will be a used SR5 or Trail and I'm not spending more than that. No price creep for me unless it has one of those cool looking hood scoop thingies

You aren't going to find a decent 2015 for even remotely close to $30K, even a stripped model.

That was over a year ago when he posted that, you should adjust your search accordingly. All the 16's I just brought up are around 30k.
