5th generation Lack of oil changes

Love this forum,lots of info so I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm looking at a 2015 sr5 premium with 24,300 miles. The previous owner only had 1 oil change at 7450 miles. It was a leased vehicle and had Toyota care so I don't know why they wouldn't have it changed. What do you think? Thanks.

I'd pass. Even though its reasonably low mileage, the previous owner obviously didn't care about or for their vehicle.

The 5th gen SR5 is very common, so you shouldn't have any problem finding a better example.

Not to be a naysayer to the other replies, but what are you basing your 1 oil-change on? Carfax?

I just traded my FJ Cruiser for a new TRD Pro and have been following the dealer who is now trying to sell my FJ. The dealer posted the Carfax, which shows all of the oil changes I had done, except for one. I had that one done at a Toyota dealer, who obviously never reported it to Carfax. So, all I can ask is what is the source of the oil change history?

It may be best to go after another vehicle if you are worried about this issue.

I ran the vin on toyotas owners site thats where I found the one oil change. The auto check shows no oil changes.

I don't know much about leasing vehicles but I do know there are stipulations. I feel like doing any kind of maintenance/repairs anywhere other than a Toyota dealership would void something. If they tell you how many miles you can drive each year I'm sure they are pretty strict on other things because you don't own it. I also wonder if it IS true that there was only one oil change maybe they were forced to buy it and that is why they are selling it now? I would also think that would be in the contract somewhere that they bring it in for routine things like that. Like I said, I don't know much about leasing vehicles but I do know that there are far too many people out there that aren't even aware that the oil needs changing....

If this is at a Toyota dealer, it should be a CPO. If so, I'd not shy away if the price is right.

If it's at a Toy dealer, and not CPO, there's a reason.

What is the price?

Never knew that things like oil changes are reported anywhere. Anyways, tell the dealer your concern and maybe they have the actual records from the customer or can get it from him.

Also forgot to mention my dealer says toyota synthetic oil changes are to be done every 10k miles. No thanks.... I'll stick to 3500-5000. Cheaper to change oil then to have an issue down the road due to lack of maitenance.

It's your money to waste, but if you could show me even one documented case of someone having "issues down the road" that were proven to be the result of changing the oil only at the factory-recommended 10K service intervals, I'd be more inclined to listen.

Yeah, this isn't the '80s anymore. I've got 85,000 miles on my 2010 and only 8 oil changes.

It's your money to waste, but if you could show me even one documented case of someone having "issues down the road" that were proven to be the result of changing the oil only at the factory-recommended 10K service intervals, I'd be more inclined to listen.

Use that as a negotiating tool if you like this car. That time frame I seriously doubt there will be any issues.

If you're REALLY concerned about it, have them do a Blackstone oil analysis on it for you. Cost is $25 I think.

Also, there are no stipulations in a lease in regards to maintenance, you get it free for 2/3 of the lease if you stick to ToyotaCare and get a 12k per year lease, but there is nothing in my contract that said I had to do maintenance anywhere in particular, or at all.
You own the car in a lease just as much as you own it if you finance....

i don't believe CarFax/AutoCheck are thorough enough to accurately report a vehicle's entire service record; there's typically some read between the lines and/or connect the dots involved.

that said, this is an SR5? if you're even asking the question, just walk away. the SR5 is common enough that you'll soon find a deal on one you're entirely comfortable with.
