5th generation rear brake rotor removal--help

Hello all. I have spent the last three hours trying to remove the rear brake rotor on my 2010 4Runner. I found a similar thread here in the forums but was unable to find any suitable information there. The rotor is loose, but it is hung up on the parking brake shoes; there must be a way to adjust the shoes to allow the disc/drum to slide off. I have been unable to find it so far. Any help here is very much appreciated.

BG, Thanks for the illustration. Still baffled though. I have gone over the brakeplate and cannot find the plug that needs to be removed to get at the adjuster. Is there anything in the manual that clarifies this?

I can't tell if the opening is supposed to be through the rotor itself?? If so, how do you position the rotor to align with the adjuster?

Gentlemen. Success! Thank you for your posts. The rotor is now off. The rotor must have been an aftermarket item since the access holes did not line up very well with the access hole in the hub.

Haven't done brakes on my 4runner, but our highlander has the same setup. The hole does not line up well with the adjuster nut and was a pain to find the first time.

A tip though, find some way to keep that adjuster nut clean and lubed to keep it from seizing. Mine was seized so I had to do some disassembly of the drum brakes to take out the adjuster nut and unstick it so I could get the shoes expanded again.

Also a M8-1.25 bolt in the threaded holes on the rotor makes getting the rotor off real easy if they're still stuck after the shoes are contracted, just for future reference.

Which way does the adjuster turn to loosen the parking brake shoes so that the rear disc is easier to remove?

I have seen the Toyota exploded image of the rear brakes (and also the adjusting diagram -- with screwdriver) but it does not make clear which way to turn it. Does it differ from Driver side to Passenger side?

I think you are saying rotating sprocket downward is loose. Therefore over the top is tight.

I am assuming this applies to both driver and passenger sides.

Unless someone installed the spreader backward which can be done on many vehicles--
