5vz horsepower question

Hey!

I was just reading the Wikipedia article on the 5 VZ engine and it says the engine has 190 horsepower. However, when I look up the engine specs for a 4runner, it says 183 horsepower. How much horsepower do these trucks really have?

My original sales brochure says 183 but 190 is only 4% more so big deal.
Has anyone ever had one on a dyno I wonder?

The Toyota Brochure for the 1997 4Runner says 183HP@4800RPM & 217LB.FT.@3600RPM for the 5VZ-FE

Those are Toyota's "published" numbers (at the crank).

Crank HP and wheel HP are different. Both lake power until force induction is introduced

Even within building the engins it could vary from 183 HP. You also have to take into effect fuel, temperature, humidity are all varients of how much HP engines make. Regardless these trucks are slower than slow.

Agreed, doing more than 65MPH on 33" tires with a lift is actually pretty scary, lol. Feels like you gotta have the 5VZ@WOT to hold that speed, lol.

So slow! But of course, I didn't buy this thing for Highways, I have a DD for that.

A good rule of thumb is there's roughly 20% HP loss to the driveline (our rigs are heavy). So if you've got 183 HP at the crank, you're getting about 146 to the wheels. This is consistent with dynos I've seen for a stock Tacoma/4Runner.

If you're driving a little sports car with a manual transmission, it's more like only a 12-15% HP loss.

I bought my 2 4runners for DD duties. LOL. I have a car and bike with plenty of power to satisfy my power needs. These things are turds though. Keeps me out of trouble I guess.

It was rated at 183 peak hp and 217 lb-ft of torque in the 4Runner, because the 4Runner has a more restrictive (read quieter) exhaust system.

All those numbers are at the flywheel. Chassis dyno numbers would be much lower.

I upgraded the RADAR detector in my car, and put the old one in the 4Runner. On my last road trip it would go off, and I'd slow down like I do in the car only to realize that I wasn't speeding enough for it to matter anyway, so I just turned the damned thing off. :mmph: :driving:
