5VZ oil cooler

Did a search on the Internet and on this site as well and could not find any info, so I thought I would just ask the question in hopes someone else has had this issue.

The 4Runner I purchased had a cooked motor, (cracked heads and A LOT of water in the oil).

Replacing with JDM motor and swapping over parts.

My question is,
Has anyone ever tried to clean/flush JUST the oil cooler for this engine?
The JDM motor does not have an oil cooler so I wanted to use the one off my old motor. Removed the cooler and the oil coming out of it is saturated with en-trained oil, (kind of like coffee with a lot of cream in color), AND the water inlet tube appears plugged with a rusty gooey powdery red bunch of crap.

A new one from the dealer is pretty expensive, have seen several on E-bay, no local scrap yards have a 3.4 5VZ motor.

So, has anyone got advice on doing a fush/clean out of the cooler, (both oil and water sides)?

I like the concept of the oil cooler on 5VZs.

I don't like the mention of rust in the water part, so unless I could be confident i got all that out (plus the oil side), I'd put the $50 ebay one on.

If you really want new, ebay has a new one for $200, but I'll bet the used one is good enough. Luck. :cowboy:

I don't know. All that ugliness is from the oil/coolant mixing that obviously went on due to the head crack. I'd try and clean it, and pressure test the coolant side. If it looked good then, I'd use it. Pics might change my mind, though. How much rust?

You can soak the oil cooler in solvent like acetone or similar to clean it internally. I'm sure the internal passage ways are NOT constrictive enough to worry about it becoming clogged no matter how much crap flowed through it when the engine fried. Of course, replace the o-ring and sealing washer with oem.

About soaking it in Acetone, I read somewhere where someone mentioned using brake fluid for cleaning oil coolers, (not the 3.4 5VZ one however).

This isn't an oil cooler like a transmission cooler.
It's very simple.

Soak in solvent, blow out with air. Repeat.

If he's sure of the internals that seems like what I would do.
I changed the seals on my 97's cooler and it was gunked up as well.

I wasn't sure how small the channels were inside of the cooler, but it ran fine before. So I removed what I could see what a brush and pick and then reinstalled it as is. I had no problems.

I like the soak and blow out with air technique.

The JDM motor does not have an oil cooler so I wanted to use the one off my old motor.

From what i've researched, the JDM motor oil cooler is built into the water pump. Hope you plan on doing the whole timing belt service on it, and I think you need to use the timing cover off your motor as well. But, be sure to double check me on this.

Oil Cooler Water ports clogged

Replacing oil cooler hoses, oil coolers water jacket in cooler is blocked. Is it possible to flush the sludge from the water jackets (piping) of the oil cooler ? Or is the internal structure of the water part of the oil cooler so fine that it won't flushed. Currently so clogged that water will not move between inlet and outlet ports. Is there a water backpressure valve in the oiler cooler? IE. will the water only flow one way?

I have it sitting in solvent and have tried blowing compressed air, and using a fine wire to clear passages.

This may be a bit extreme, but if its full of sludge, I remember reading something from a guy that rebuilt Jags. He has a sort of penetrating oil/solvent that he used that was 50:50 acetone and ATF. He said it was like Kroil but better. Dont know it its worth giving it a dip in that mixture but just my 2 cents.

Interesting. Sure not going to cool the oil for you if its not letting the coolant flow through it. I don't recall hearing of this one. However possible. Did you remove it off the engine or trying to do this on the block?
