5w20 vs. 10w-30 for hotter climate

The dealer has always used 5w-20, which is what is marked on the engine filler cap and manual, but I just noticed on my most recent invoice that they used 10-30. I recently moved to southern AZ, and this is the first oil change I have had done here. Maybe they use the heavier oil in the hotter climate?

I felt the 10 W–30 would be the oil of choice here in North TX in the 07 T4R since that was used in our 2002 Camry. When I saw the 5 W 20 I called the service manager and asked if that was the correct wt for this area and he said yes. I have not checked the manuals good but I can remember options due to areas on some other brands in the past.

My current challenge is the mileage that the oil has to be changed to stay in the warranty’s guidelines. The Mfg and Local Dealers show differences in recommended services. The 02 Camry every 5,000 mi, 2010 Highlander every 10,000 per Mfg and 5,000 per 2nd Dealer on both. Our recent purchased 07 T4R every 5,000 or 6 mo per Dealer. Since 03 I have averaged 3,000 mi per year and changed my oil yearly in my Explorer that I replaced with the T4R. My goal was 5,000 and one yr oil change vs two but @ 2,000 mi now I will possibly drive 4,000 mi. For peace of mind and warranty purposes, I guess I need to change every 6 mo. With today’s oil standards and gas prices this would seem to be a waste if I only need to drive 3-5,000 mi. jow

I live in Texas and growing up my dad always used 10w-30 in the hotter months and 5W-30 in the winter months. I mostly do the same.

I'm also in north texas and the dealership has always used 5w20 and i get the oil changed every 5,000 miles. I'm almost at 150,000 miles and have had no problems!

My old Stewart Warner mechanical vs electrical gauges would tell me if my engine oils were breaking down due to heat, miles and etc. I had a 70 VW, 72 & 80 Jeep Wagoneers that would breakdown. I could add STP and gain PSI back and never loose it at 3,000 mi 30 wt oil changes. The Stewart Warner mechanical gauges gave good calibrated readings on water and transmission fluids as well. All in addition to factory gauges were a good double checks of conditions.

I also believe the technology in today’s engines and oils handles the heat and miles better. Is it a waste to change oil in less than a year with 3 - 4, 000 mi of very moderate driving and light towing (local handyman driving/hauling, light 5X7 utility trailer use, light 15’ boat towing and light firewood towing in utility trailer (10-15 total local towing/trips)? Plus I know of contamination but have you seen any at 5,000 mi? jow
