Hello everyone! I just signed up for T4R.org but have been reading for years you guys are the best.
So here's the deal. I have a 3rd Gen Toyota 4Runner, its a 1997 SR5 V6, with 235,000 miles, but is absolutely spotless and runs great.
Recently I have been reading tons of threads about upgrading speakers that fit in the stock door panel sections. I wanted to make a thread that let everyone know the facts of speaker sizes and what fits, since i JUST finished replacing mine.
In the front door panels, are stock six and a half inch speakers. I upgraded them to Pioneer 6 and a half inch three-way components with no added fabrication it was a plug and play deal once the door panels are off. Also, the front doors contain tweeters, in which I put two Rockford Fosgate .75" (3/4 inch) tweeters, again this was plug and play once the cover is popped off.
The rear door panels come off to reveal stock 4 inch speakers. Heres the tricky part. While the cup that the original 4" sits in and is connected to the door panel through will fit a 5 and 1/4 inch speaker, the cup requires serious fabrication and the speaker still may rub the inside of the door panel when reassembled. Here's the good news. If you scrap the cup completely, you can mount 6 and a half inch speakers directly in the speaker hole. The ones i used that fit perfectly were Pioneer 3 way components that said shallow mount on the box. They were 69.99 from Best Buy for the pair. 2 of the holes on the inside of the door itself will fit stock screws. You will have to drill a third hole to get one more screw in, and I mounted it using only three screws. The magnet did NOT HIT THE REAR WINDOW when it was rolled down! It fit perfectly and was super solid with only 3 screws. The door panel itself did not rub, and I have heard no rattling so far, which is a huge pet peeve of mine.
Also, I mounted a set of Sony Xplod tweeters (.75" inch) on the rear door panels itself by drilling a small hole right below the door lock. They look clean and OEM and sound great, however require some fabrication so they are solid on the panel.
Keep in mind that this job does not require anything more than some screws and a drill they are very simple jobs, as I am not that mechanically inclined (my dad however is the pro haha). Also, I know these are not the best speakers, and no I do not have an amp, but they sound a MILLION times better than the crappy stock speakers.
