6 disc changer question

Hello to all. I just found this website 2 days ago. Today I am a proud owner of my first 4Runner. I took possession of a 2006 SR5 4x4 V-6. It is for the wife as a replacement to a 2002 Ford Escape. I really didnt know much about the Toytoa line, but must say I am very impressed so far(I am a self-proclamed FORD Guy!). Anyway, on to my question. The one major disappointment in our new T4R is that it only has a single disc. I beleive after looking at a few posts, that it is the basic system as well. I would like to get a 6 disc in dash unit for the vehicle, but am not sure which vehicles are compatable for a swap. Also, are there any special tools or instructions for removal? I have seen a changer out of a 06 Sequoia... Would that work? And after I get the unit, are there any special parts or problems I will run into? Or will it be a simple plug and play type setup? PLease help me out if you can!!! Thanks....

JBL makes a six disc changer for the 4runner, I have one, however I don't think it is compatible with the wiring for the base system ( could be wrong though). Most people here get the Scion Headunits, good quality and an easy swap. I think they make a 6 disc. Do a search on the forum for Scion Head units or 6 disc changer and you will get a ton of threads to check out

I may have found a unit out of a sequoia, and I am going to check with a dealership tomorrow to see if the model numbers are going to match up, but what all is involved in removing that old unit? Have you had any experience with this?

Removing the old unit is easy, its just a couple plugs, getting the dash prepped for removal is the harder part and its not hard, just takes some time...there is a thread on here someone that has a link that walks you through it step by step... I i will look for it and post it if I find it...

I've been looking for those instructions as well..... i need to take the one that I put in out becuse it keeps giving me an error 4. Goign to try and fix it myself, but will probably end up buying another. I just can't go back to the single disk after having this one. The sound quality is 10 times better as well.

So you had the single disc first? Where did you get your unit from, and what type of unit was it? Also, did you have the base system in your 4R? If I had the money I would put the new(?) Pioneer in-dash 6 CD/DVD changer with 7" touchscreen display! When you swapped out your stereo, did you run into any road blocks? Also, did you need any special tools? Still waiting on the wife to decide which way she wants to go on the radio for now...(its her car!)

I had the stock toyota single disk/tape deck in the 4runner when we bought it. I replaced it in January with a Scion 6 disk changer. The scion sounds great, and having 6 disks in the dash is awesome. Problem was that the guy didn't put the unit in ship mode before shipping it, and it never really worked right. disk number 2 never played correctly, and I think it eventually caused my error 4. I already bought another unit (new in box... left over stock from a dealer) that i'm confident will work flawless, but I took apart the old one and realigned all of the trays, and I'm thinking it will work now. I'm going to put the original Scion unit back in my car for a month or so to make sure it works normally and then try and sell it.

As long as you follow the directions in the link above, you won't have any problems. Took me about an hour the first time in January, but only about 20 minutes when I took it apart yesterday. Pretty much everything is held in with plastic clips, so you have to be careful, but it's still pretty easy. I think it's so easy because the car is relatively new. In 5 or 6 years, the plastic will be more brittle, and it won't be nearly as easy.

No special tools required. Just a 10mm wrench or socket driver. Might be a different story if you end up buying an aftermarket unit though.

Still waiting for my wife to decide on what she wants to put in, and when.... Have been told that since my unit is the stock single disc unit, without JBL, that I cannot use a JBL 6 disc unit, because I dont have the "pre-amp" connection. Also, I have been told that I can hok up the unit, but wont get any sound out of it, or something like that... But I think she may want to go the route of either the Pioneer or Kenwood 7" touchscreen unit in the dash. Has anyone had ay experience with either of these units. The Pioneer unit is the PCH6800DVD, but cant remember the kenwood unit off the top of my head... Either way, I cant wait to get something... in the mean time we have her MP3 player plugged in the input jack on the AUX port!! :bigok:

I have the premium indash 6 disk changer. It is option code "DJ" , I'm also thinking of getting the Scion head unit to replace mine .
