I had 6 miles left before turning 80K today. End of warranty for catalytic converters. Have had a little problem with a rotten egg order since I purchased this vehicle. Have tried the usual of finding a gas station with the least sulphur content and the least offender. Settled on using Shell for the past year. Hasn't eliminated the odor but it was the best gas dealer I found. Believe or not, Chevron was the worst. Before I switched to Shell, I generally used Chevron. I always used the same octane that is rated for this vehicle.
Anyways, I had been talking to my service advisor for the past year about the rotten egg odor. So yesterday, I told him my mileage, my concern, end of warranty, the TSB, and Desert Toyota of Tucson stood right up, did the diagnose, and performed the TSB! Got 2 new cats along with the firmware flash. Of course, now I must give them a pat on the back, as Desert Toyota has always been fair to me, unlike it's competitor in Tucson (Precision Toyota).
To get to the real point of this post:
My question to you guys/gals: - is there a right way (and wrong way) to burn in catalytic converters?
There seems to be some evidence on the Net that cats need to be burned in. I forgot to ask my advisor cause we were running so late.
Anyways, I'm going to bed and I'll read/comment in the morning. Thanks.
