60,000 service

I bought an '06 4runner in December - and it's time for the 60,000 service- called Toyota and they said it would be about $300-$400. We have a local gas station that has a mechanic and does ALOT of work on all types of cars- he said that he could do it for <$100 if all checks out OK- so I am taking it to him instead. what do most pay for the 60,000 service?

Also have a recall-floor mat interferes with accelerator pedal- will probably have to go to Toyota for this though..

I have an 03 that had that service done. All the services (except for the caliper-replacement) were done at a dealership.

Im not sure if the 06 has a "sealed transmission" with the 100k fluid, but my 03 doesnt, and had the following done:

-Oil Filter change
- Gasket
- 7 qts. motor oil
- Fuel Treatment
- Throttle Body Intake Cleaner
- Cooling System Treatment
- 1 gal. antifreeze
- 4 qts. ATF T-IV (tranny fluid)
- 2 gaskets
- gasket, transmission
- gasket, drain plug
- 14 pts. 75w90 gear lube
- valve assembly, vent
- element sub-assy, AI

Parts: $231.80
Labor: $428.15

This was March, 2009. They gave me some discounts, so it wasnt the sum of those 2 costs. But it was still close to $600.

- Throttle Body Intake Cleaner (If you can use a screw driver and operate a spray can its very easy)
- Cooling System Treatment
- 1 gal. antifreeze
- 4 qts. ATF T-IV (tranny fluid)
- 2 gaskets
- gasket, transmission
- gasket, drain plug
- 14 pts. 75w90 gear lube (The differential oil is easy to change but you may get dirty.)
- valve assembly, vent
- element sub-assy, AI (Air filter is about as easy to change as opening the hood)

Parts: $231.80
Labor: $428.15

But im not taking apart something that could potentially lead to an "oops", and a flatbed to the dealership.- Cooling System Treatment

- 14 pts. 75w90 gear lube (The differential oil is easy to change but you may get dirty.) Ive stripped out drain plugs before on my old rides (yes, the Suzuki again). After spending an afternoon with a tap and DIE set to create a new plug, i'll pass on that.- valve assembly, vent
- element sub-assy, AI (Air filter is about as easy to change as opening the hood) True. But in the end, i see it as keeping up with the warrantee. It's done well for me when something that's non-warrantee-related has popped up (2 times now) and coulda cost me a few hundred or more, but they see in my history how I do all maintenence at the dealership and i get the fix for free. One example is the Fan Resistor. Didnt cost me a thing.

Pads? Rotors? Both? Have the calipers checked!

Doing your own work or having a local mechanic do the work on the vehicle will not void the warranty.

That's true, but I dont take chances with my vehicles. I choose to have the Toyota mechanics take care of mine. That's all.

I have a friend that is a service writer for a Honda dealership. He makes his living on customers like you. :naughty:

Glad to be one of the few helping put food on your friend's table.

In my own defense, ive had local mechanics before. One in my home town i trusted and didnt come cheap, but stood behind his work. Last time i saw him was when my Exploder came in with a cracked head. He fixed it, i sold it, got the 4Runner (2003) and i havent seen him since. The 03 Sport I have has had all suggested maintenence done to it, and the only "surprise" it had was the front calipers. The replacement was done by my neighborhood mechanic, and even when he was done it had to go to the dealership cuz i was concerned about the "pedal travel"....hell, im still concerned and wondering if im going to have to buy new OEM calipers, new master cyl and booster.

By the way, i think its a bit messed up that people here would give others crap for how they decide to keep up with the maintenence on their 4Runners.

Hope digging out my old bill to copy what was done helped out.

I just hate getting that feeling in the pit of your stomach when something an independent mechanic fixed, then it isnt done right and you get that pissed + sick feeling while screaming, "WTF! I JUST HAD THIS THING FIXED I THOUGHT!"
