60 second searches??

Here is a suggestion:

If I try to find info in the search bar and I come up empty it tells me I have to wait 60 seconds to do another search? That is very annoying especially when you are trying to use a variance of words and phrases to find something.

Why the rule?

Okay but 1/60 seconds is crazy. How about at least 4? There are not that many people on here at one time...

Plus, you are the psychotic one when it comes to searches. IF someone asks a question that has been covered you always tell them to do a search. Okay, well, if it takes that long to do a search, no wonder they don't...heck I would go somewhere else for the answer!

Yeah the 60 second thing can get really annoying sometimes. I do the search to help members out and sometimes the first attempt doesn't come up with anything worthwhile so I have to wait to search again. Usually I just go do something else and come back to it.

Maybe we can lower it down to 30 seconds? There usually isn't too many members on at one time so doing searches shouldn't bog the hardware down too much. I'm a member at another board that won't allow searching if there are more than X amount of members online. Now THAT is really annoying...

i would love to see a plot of server load vs search interval. i'm willing to concede that if the search interval was set to 0, server load could get very high, but i bet it drops off very quickly. i bet there's an insignificant difference between setting the interval a 5 or 60 seconds.

using numbers from the front page: there are ~4000 members, and right now there are ~40 online. i don't know what the statistics are for use, but 1% on at a time sounds reasonable. of those 1% on at a given time, let's say 10% of them are searching for something (given the number of repeated questions, i'd be willing to say that 0% are searching). so that's 4 people that would be searching. that's not too bad. i don't know how big the database is, but searching for keywords can't be that hard.

i understand that setting the interval is also good for preventing the trolls and other bad users from repeatadly searching just for the sake of bringing down the site, but again a small 5sec interval would discourage them. just like on unix, if you type in your password wrong, it purposly waits a few seconds before you get a second chance. this makes it significantly harder to do a coordinated attack, but it's still reasonably easy for the legitimate user to deal with.

sorry for the long rant, but the 60sec search interval has bothered me for a long time, i just never got around to complaining about it :)

That is not an attack but rather the truth. Seems as if he is always critical of newbies and their requests.

Thanks for the decrease!

maybe you should do a search on my posts. LOL. I use the search button quite frequently... and yes.. it does get a bit annoying if your search results come back with nothing.

When a topic has been covered..... wouldn't it be easier for someone to search for that thread.. because.. obviously we've all put our comments in there. Maybe I'll go do a search on if the "go do a search" topic has been covered. :p
