6'6"... 2010 Trail, 2018 TRD Off Road or 2008 Land Cruiser?!

Good morning,

Long time Lurker, and fan of the platform.

Almost bought my wife a new 2016 4Runner Limited but head room for me was "limited":lmao: so we ended up with a new GX460 for her that year. We still have it and LOVE it.

Its time to retire my 200K mile Ford Expedition and i'm at a crossroads now.

Did the 2010 body style of the Trail ever come without a sunroof? I know the new TRD Off Road trucks are available without a sunroof and thats what i'd "need" to be comfortable in there (headed to dealership today to test fit) but i'm partial to the original 5th gen styling.

On the other hand, should I just buy a 200 series Land Cruiser? I do tow a motorcycle trailer from time to time (sometimes a car trailer) but I also drive 20K miles a year. Improved fuel economy and a new truck would (theoretically) last longer? But for $30-35K i could get into an early 200 series cruiser and it would have more space for someone my size. Im already used to about 15mpg also...

I'm torn. :noidea:

Im sure the LC vs 4runner debate has happened here before but unsure if my dilemma has been discussed.

Any input is appreciated.

The driver's position absolutely THE BEST of all the cars. And...as an added bonus, the back seat had the most room with me in the driver's seat.

I really, really wanted a Land Cruiser, but the 100 Series was completely out. The 200 series was better fitment wise, but the Lexus GX460 and the 4runnner were clear winners. In the end, we opted for the 4Runner Trail for it's added off road capability.

With regards to MPG's, it was hard not to lean towards the 4Runner. And in the end...with 30K miles on her already, very happy with the final decision. (And yes, my 2016 Trail has no sunroof)...

I also shopped LR3, Range Rovers, Cayennes, and G wagons but maintenance scares the heck out of me with two young kids about to start school and no time to wrench.

If its as roomy as you say it is (i'm assuming you dont have a sun roof?) the choice will be clear for me also.

From one newbie to another: welcome to the forum @DGI and looking forward to hearing what you go with. Given your size and your towing habits, I'd go with the LC. I'm big fan of the current 4Runner but I don't tow. If I did any amount of regular towing, I'd want something more than my 4.0L V6. That being said, it seems you are in the right direction.

I suggest you rent one and take it on a long trip, I still bought mine because it was really the only option in my price range, but i can't drive for more than a couple hours without taking a break to stretch my leg. if you have long legs and large feet you have to drive with your right leg kinda sideways, for me it puts pressure on my knee that makes it stiff after a couple hours. i can stretch my right leg by putting my foot behind the pedals, but that isn't a safe position to leave your leg.

I know exactly what you mean about knee/ankle pain. I'm a 36" inseam with a size 16 boot. Most every car/truck is tight.

You guys must be all legs, I am 6'3 and my head slightly grazes on my '18 TRD Off Road but while I am driving I dont touch. I had an SR5 before this specifically cause I didnt want the sunroof.

If it would have been in the budget I would have gotten the Land Cruiser.
Local dealer has a left over 2016 model with about $8K off.

I didn't want that much of a payment, so I'm driving a 4Runner.

That is surprising to hear the LC has less rear leg room than the 4Runner. According to the spec sheet, LC has slightly more. But numbers don't always translate to real world figures, either. I thought my Tacoma had the same rear room as the 4Runner (per specs), but that did not turn out to be true.

I'm 6'3" and have a lot of room over my head. and no I do not have a sunroof.

I do however have the seat quite low and the back all of the way up. I have 8 screws in my neck from spine surgery and if I don't sit like that, I am not comfortable at all. I still need to stop every hour or two to stretch on long rides.

the LC tucks up everything higher underneath, so it makes sense you sacrifice some leg room. i bet it measures more but has a higher floor or something so it's effectively actually less

yeah i've got loads of headroom (when i forget to take off my hardhat i can still almost fit with it on), but i have to bend my leg with the seat all the way back

If the car manufacturers would adopt pedal adjustments...our lives would be sooo much better.

OP, why not another GX. it will do all of the towing you have a need for and give you the head room with similar MPGs as a 4Runner. Since you already have one do you not want 2 of the same vehicle? I am quite a bit shorter than you (5'9") and even I felt a little cramped in the 4Runner. I have a GX now and it feels way more spacious.

I actually proposed a GX470 to my wife as I could find one with close to 100K miles for close to $10K but she doesnt like the idea of having two of the same truck in the garage...

She still has her heart set on a G-wagon or a Range Rover entering the garage but with the possibility of $2-5K a year to keep them on the road... I think this line of thinking is smarter.

I can easily tow a motorcycle trailer behind a 4Runner or borrow her car for heavier towing tasks. Or rent a Uhaul and trailer and get the job done that way... we'll see

Pushbutton on a Limited model only I think.
Remote start available for any.
My Pro has heated seats, think they are available on other models as well.

I'm 6'3" and equal parts legs and torso. I like to sit somewhat upright with the steering wheel telescoped as far as possible so I can have the seat as far back as possible.

5th gen 4Runner without sunroof: I fit with about 3-4" of headroom with the seat in the lowest setting.

5th gen 4Runner with sunroof: only about 1-2" of headroom with seat at the lowest setting.

2016 Land Cruiser: my head touches the roof with the seat at the lowest setting unless I lean uncomfortably far back.
