6cyl vs. 8cyl

Hi all, im kinda a new to this forum. I am looking to purchase a 03-05 4runner sport. I know the gas milage is not that different, but what are some of the pro's or con's. I feel like the 8 cylinder has a better reputation because its been around longer.

Both are proven great engines! If you want the V8 the 05 was updated with the VVTi and 35 more hp. If want the V6 the 05 was updated with the 5 speed trans.

are you looking to get an 03-05 because you don't like the way the xenon headlights look on the 06+ 4runners... cuz personally i don't like the way the 06+ headlights look, i also don't like the way the grill looks either... 03-05 looks way better IMO

I got a V-6 because it's ALL aluminum where V-8 is cast iron with composite heads and steel oil pan. I'm not sure how different metals expand and contract these days but in the past - leaks were common.

You can't go wrong. If you spend a few minutes and read these threads you'll figure out that everyone is pretty loyal to what they have which, to me, is pretty cool. To me that says it's hard to go wrong. If you choose the V8 figure out where it is in it's timing belt cycle. That's a "nice-to-know" before you buy. I'd hate for your next post to be all about a super-sweet 89k mile V8 T4R and we pipe up and tell you change the belt and you start :cursin:

This certainly wouldn't be the deciding factor for me in deciding between the V6 and the V8 since both engines are extremely reliable.

Pre-'05 V8's have the 5-speed vs. the 4-speed for the V6, which helps compensate a bit for the higher fuel consumption. However, they're still somewhat close in terms of MPG, so apart from that the advantage of the V8 is in it's towing capacity.
