6th gen 4Runner question

Whenever it comes out it will more than likely get the crummy 3.5 V6.

I seriously hope not but could absolutely see this happening since that's what the 3rd Gen Tacoma has too. In it's current form the HP/Torque is about the same as the 4.0 offers too so not much to gain there.

Stats of 3.5L from Tacoma:

3.5-Liter V6 DOHC 24-Valve direct-injection Atkinson-cycle engine with VVT-iW (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Wide) intake and VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) exhaust, with 278 hp @ 6000 rpm/265 lb.-ft. @ 4600 rpm (bore x stroke: 94.0 x 83.0 mm; compression ratio: 11.8)


I could also see them going with the 6 speed auto from the Tacoma for better fuel mileage or worse the 8 speed from the Highlander.

My biggest worry is that the 6th gen 4Runner will have idle start & stop and/or variable cylinder management. I really, really don't want a vehicle that has either. I also worry that it won't be body on frame.

The start/stop function is really annoying. My neighbor has that in a Volvo and it's questionable how beneficial it is in saving gas if you never sit in traffic. If they offer it then they should offer the ability to disable it.

My predictions:

It will be a 2023 MY coming out around Sept 2022.

It'll have two motor options. A turbocharged 3.5L and a 4cyl hybrid.

It will have the 8 speed transmission.

It will still be body on frame.

The fanbois will still whine about the following items: no straight axle in the front, no diesel option, and the TSS nannies........despite them buying an OR trim with a bunch of off-road nannies.

Most of the threads actually relate to the 5th gen, as the description is miss-noted for the 2019 4Runner model. :shrug:

for some reason the mods don't want to change the tags, but 2019 and 2020 4Runners are still 5th gen.

If you have a 2019 or 2020 4Runner and ask a question here, not many people will see it, use the 5th gen section.

My reliable source tells me that it'll be a CVT with 26 inch tires and a 50hp 3 cylinder engine.

According to my "contact" at Toyota, the 6th gen will be available late 2021 as a 2022 model year. We'll now have the choice of two engines. A turbo 4cyl, and a 4 liter 32 valve V-8 hybrid. 2023 model will have a diesel 5 cylinder option. All 4Runners will go to an AWD system with low range only being offered in the "off-road" packages.

How much is all of that going to cost? I bet a bunch.
