I second this, @Whippersnapper - yesterday at the dealer they told me that corporate almost discontinued the 4Runner, like they did with the FJ, because of low demand. LMAO there are 4Runners on every corner of every city in the US.

Doesn't surprise me, I looked at a pilot and it wasnt very impressive. Fold down arm rests like our old chevy conversion van! I wish it had swiveling captain's chairs and a cb radio

4runner is going to be fine...proudly built in Japan. Tacos are garbage trucks...only redeeming quality is the 1st gen. Shit can it and bring the Hilux. Tariffs or not...

The only thing my wife liked about the Pilot was the fold down arm rests. LOL

Dealerships, and most sales folks, have no idea what they're talking about. I hate the fact that I can read over Toyota's website, do a couple of cursory google searches, and know more about the products then they do. But, this isn't exclusive to the car industry. Hi-Fi and firearms, my other hobbies, are even worse.

As for a diesel, I traded my '17 Nissan Titan XD Cummins for my 4Runner. Old school diesels can run forever, new ones maybe IF they are maintained. With current environmental junk; DPF, DEF, regens, EGR, multistage turbos it's really important to have a good techs because things are going to break. The dealership near Dayton Ohio where I purchased my truck had three diesels they regularly worked on... Three... Are you kidding me? Diesel being new to Toyota USA, not going to be good.

I agree, diesels arent for durability these days. They are to be used hard everyday. The emissions stuff always fails so pipe dreams of 700k are just that. Had a duramax LML great when it ran right! Nightmare when it didn't.

BMW builds stuff worldwide. Years ago I looked at a window sticker on a 3 or 5 series, made in south Africa.

I like my automobiles to be made by a dedicated Union. USA, Japan and Germany are the only countries I know of that have that. A cousin of mine works at VW in Germany and has for years, it's a great job and hes skilled.

That's why many Toyota models like 4Runner, Tacoma and Corolla have the reputation they do.

Tesla has all these flaws because they hire people off the street to work on cars when they need the UAW. American or not an entire factory of people that have no experience gets you only so far. It's the same in Mexico, they built the VW bug for 50 years now they can build a BMW? Wrong

The 4Runner has skirted death a few times in the past decade. As the 4th gen was outgoing, only the fact that they were so far into development saved it. I have it on pretty good authority that the 4Runner was supposed to die at 2018ish due to corporate fuel economy regs, but some additional vehicles with high mileage saved it. Demand isn’t the only thing that determines if a vehicle survives.

As far as shared platforms between Tacoma and 4Runner, everything is moving to the TNGA platforms over the next 5 years. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Tacoma and 4Runner converge on the TNGA BOF midsize platform. I expect that there will be some technology to improve efficiency due to the high sales volume and the impact to corporate fuel efficiency.

That article is from 2017. Toyota most definitely has a very strong Union presence in Japan and they aren't going to get jobs taken away, perhaps if they add manufacturing of a new model but the Supra is made in Deutschland. Unless they send us the 79 series the 4Runner better stay where it's at

FYI - the new Supra is made in Austria...in the same town as the Mercedes G Wagon

My former life was in automotive management. It's more about the engineering of the vehicles & company wide culture vs the assembly. Brands like GM who have poor quality reputations at their US based plants will only have it magnified more in Mexico. Lack of manufacturing control is not "country" based, it's company "culture" based. I've been to many plants in Mexico for various makers, the same "loose" culture one would see in a US GM plant exists in Mexico as well. The well managed companies, like Toyota, will be well managed in Mexico generally. That does not mean there will not be startup issues with a new plant, etc....

The quality facts simply don't support the union theory. Anyways, the Mexican BMW plant is brand new and like most modern manufacturing it's mostly automated. Although I don't know if the robots are unionized.

I had Craftsman weed eater which was made in Mexico. It lasted 6 month before piston rings failed and thing lost all of useful power. Hopefully unique case but bad initial impression about build quality there. I'd buy hats and boots made in Mexico though.

Not sure why you quoted me for this rant. Anyways I’m much older than you, own a non union manufacturing company and am delighted at the lack of unionized work rules which I know well enough from my many years with the United Steel Workers.

No, Tesla has flaws because they are a very young manufacturing company lacking the design and manufacturing expertise that long-established automakers (and their supply chains) already have. It's also a hostile industry. Unions would be a great thing for Tesla's workforce, but the company can't afford it yet.

Take a critical look at Tesla's manufacturing lines and compare it to Toyota/GM/Ford/etc. The established automakers are highly automated, tesla simply isn't yet. Look at pictures of production lines from Tesla vs. any others -- they have pallets with boxes of parts at each assembly station. That's woefully inefficient, but it's also incredibly expensive just to get to the point of automation that Toyota/GM/etc. benefit from.
