6th Generation Coming in 2022?

Don't be surprised if Toyota brings a Hybrid and/or EV for the new 4Runner.

Lately, every new model Toyota has introduced in North America has been a dedicated Hybrid (Sienna, Venza). According to the following report from Australia, the new Prado will be offered with a 2.5L hybrid powertrain. If I had to guess, this is the exact same A25A-FXS engine used in the new Sienna, Venza, and Lexus 300h (among others). This will most certainly be the engine Toyota will use in the new 4runner. It'll go from 270hp to around 243hp but the gas mileage should improve significantly.

Unfortunately I think you're right. Not that it's not a good engine/hybrid combo. But it's just too damn small for what we want to do in the 4Runner. Maybe as a base engine. But it would then presumably have a tow rating more like 2500lbs. That's not really competitive when the new Bronco comes with a 400ish hp twin turbo v6.

If you go back to the source (in japanese) it states there is an expectation for a 3.5L turbo and a 3.5L hybrid system...no mention of a 2.5L

I noticed that as well but it's referring to the full-size Land Cruiser 300. I wish the new Prado/4Runner would get that engine.

I'm assuming that the Japanese site originally published information on the next gen Land Cruiser Prado but took it down. Several websites are using it for their "source" and they're all saying that the site claims the Prado's current 2.7L engine will be replaced with a 2.5L hybrid.

Cool. Less towing capacity than a Wrangler and slower than a Subaru Cross trek. Sounds like a winner.

I hope that the rumors are not correct. But... Toyota came back in 2020 with a new Venza that has 250hp - old one was the 296hp v6. New minivan is the same hybrid setup. Old one had 296hp. New one is 243hp.

However - I do think the new versions of both are actually faster at least 0-60 than the old v6. So there's some silver lining.

There's just no way that a 185hp 4cyl is enough for steady state highway speed towing in difficult conditions. I understand that we rarely use over 200hp steady state, but sometimes we do want that. I just don't think that that is enough power. A turbo4 could probably work with a hybrid.

It would be maddening because they definitely can give us a Turbo 4 hybrid that should be good for over 300 HP and Tq, but I'm fearing that they'll go with the boring option.

Jeep now has a SWB, 4-door, and a pickup SFA rig.

Ford is rolling out two removable top Broncos with a factory crawler package and a massive mutant Warthog coming 2023 MY.

Toyota might be killing the Land Cruiser and is mulling over a gutless engine.

Seems like toyota is really at a crossroads here. Their product lineup for BOF trucks and SUVs is so old it's not competitive. If there aren't major performance improvements in the next generation of all of the BOF models - Toyota might really be signaling that it's done with this market and is moving on to focus only on hybrid and BEV people movers. Hope that's not the case.

I suspect the tundra update planned for 2020 test mules came out for testing and sucked. So they pulled it back and had to go back to the design team for something better in terms of engine/transmission.

The Tundra and Sequoia are so horrifically outclassed by just about everything in their segments the only reason they even sell them at this point is that some buyers don't realize that companies other than Toyota also make cars.

I sat in a Sequoia TRD-Pro the other month. Holy Shit is the interior straight out of the late 1990s. The touch screen looked like someone swapped out an old Alpine Double-Din CD player/radio for something new they found on Crutchfield.

The body also looks like someone took a good looking truck, carved it out of butter, and left it in the sun for a bit until it melted. I have to admit it did look pretty OK in Army Green w/Black Trim bits.

I personally wouldn’t mind a less powerful/more efficient engine if they lost some weight/size. The 5th Gen is like the old sequoia. I think the 4th Gen size is perfect.

For a business vehicle - they make a lot of sense. They have less than half the failure rate of the next best domestic truck. So if out of service = money, I'd go for a Tundra every time. Or if I were doing a lot of off road miles. The running gear is night and day different from the domestic options in terms of being designed for life in the dirt. So I guess if I were buying for use for actual work - plowing snow, ranch life, oil fields, utility lineman work - Tundra hands down.

But for daily driving, highway trips, and towing - the Tundra just doesn't really hold up anymore other than value. Tundra's are a lot cheaper than the domestic options. And I think that's why the Sequoia still sells better than it should - it's cheap at $60k compared to the GM variants. I'd look really hard at a Tahoe with the 3.0 diesel myself. But it'll be a lot more $ than a Sequoia.

Toyota needs to swing for the fences this next generation. We all know they like to keep vehicles around 10+ years before a model change. It will be important for their next decade of vehicles to be successful. Honestly if they're anything short of a home run then I don't see myself buying a new Toyota. The Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco have hit all the marks that their fans and enthusiasts have wanted. I'd rather keep my 5th gen or move to a used 200 series than get a neutered 6th gen if it comes to that.

I priced out a Ford Bronco Badlands model with Sasquatch package and it came right to $50k. Not bad if you ask me since I've spent that much and more on my 4Runner and mods. Combine with dealer incentives and that you can get great deals on Domestic vehicles then I could see that dropping into low to mid $40k after a few years. An out of the box off-road beast that literally requires zero mods that would basically sh*t on any TRD Pro. I hate to say it but Ford is doing fantastic things with their off-road division. From the Raptor, to Bronco, Tremor Super Duty's, and Ford Ranger. A 6th gen 4Runner anything short of a legitimate Bronco competitor or killer is a no go for me.

If the next one is ONLY Hybrid, im most def out on that one. I was seriously considering a new Bronco once the Warthog was revealed but now theres news the 2022 Mustang will get a 6.8L v8 in some way so I may just wait for that lol.
If it turns out to be true I'll keep my 4Runner till the wheels fall off and get a new Mustang....its been almost 6 years since I've had one.

Curious what will happen to new BOF SUV and engine development now that Ketchup Boy is the new Climate Czar and GM just dropped out of the lawsuit against California.

Toyota seemed to be stalling development, but they still seem insistent on suing Cali for our kooky emissions standards.
