'82 22R in an '88 Runner?

Any reason this would pose any problems, I'm gonna guess that it should bolt right in but I want to make sure before I yank the 22RE in the 4Runner.
Bought an engine from a guy, said he rebuilt it intake to pan and hes put 50K on it since.
Bought it and tore it apart today.
Total bull. New head. Just cleaned up the outside nice.
Not just that but he told me it was an '86, which was BS too, its got double row timing chain, so it could be anywhere from '80 -'82

So I still need an engine and whereas this one hasnt been rebuilt its not in bad condition by any means, so I might as well use it.
It will work right?

'80 was a 20R.

He could have upgraded to dual row TC when he rebuilt it (or if )

But if it runs and you need an engine, why not?

If you have emissions testing it could be a problem though.

The older 22R had a slightly longer block, and can be fitted with a 20R head for more power. If you decide to rebuild yourself, that can get you more power.

That's if it's the older engine. Do a google search for the 22R to be able to spot the differences between the older 22R and the newer one, there are more telltale signs than the timing chain, as the timing chain can be changed.

Yes, it will work.

But things to consider, 22RE's used a different/bigger clutch set than the 22R, and the fly wheel.

You're talking about going from EFI to a carburated engine. I think you will have to change a lot of things to make it work and IMHO, I wouldn't do it.

I'm pretty sure the cylinder head is different between 22re and 22r. I believe it is port shape and size.

I just got through putting a 22r in my 87.....
lots of difference...I think my 22r is a 84 but I haven't confirmed that as of yet. The exhaust and intake were both different than the 87 22re as was the head...an 84 has a completely different gasket setup due to this.....I was fortunate enough to have all the right stuff to match. My advice is that if you dont have the manifolds the chase has just begun to place that engine in your 88....just my $.02 worth.
