84 22R Head Removal. Help needed.

Hi, replacing a head gasket for my friend on his 84 22r. Its been off roaded a lot and has 33 inch tires and several inches of body lift. So on top of the fact that i have to stand on crates to be able to reach the motor, its disgustingly filthy, so maybe I have overlooked something.

The problem is with actual removal of the head from the block. Intake and exhaust manifolds came off no problem, power steering pump + bracket is removed from head and set aside. Rockers + Cam/gear/caps/headbolts out. Head WILL NOT come off of block. I'm not real familiar with these motors and I cant even seem to find a good place to leverage a pry bar to try and break it free.

Is there a good spot to try and pry this sucker off with? Have I somehow overlooked something that is still holding the head on? Finally, he overheated it (to what extent I dont know) before having me look at it. Do these motors tend to weld the head to the block if they are severely overheated?

Sorry for all the questions, im a honda guy, so take pity on me:help:

Sorry to double post but i got the head off just wanted to come back and say how in case anyone else encounters a similar problem later. Hooked up my cherry picker to the front and rear lift hooks, cranked the heck out of it and it finally broke free.

Did you find the hidden head to timing cover bolt that hides in the puddle of oil just beneath the cam sprocket?

ahaha, no, i had found and removed that bolt, thank god the manual makes such a deal about it. Was just a 26 year old OEM HG and the head was completely stuck.:toilet: Valves had a little carbon, but overall i was very impressed with its condition. Nice little motor.

Pic of the beast for ya

One other question. When i was trying to remove/label all the vac lines, The two that run to a little vacuum connector that screws into the thermostat housing took the little tangs from the vac connector with them. Can someone tell me the name of this part and save me a headache when i go try to source it? thanks.

I have had very good results from super gluing the little nibs back on, not sure how it will work out in the long haul but so far so good.

I will dig through my junk tonight when I get home from work and see if I can pull out a part number.

Edit: Oh, you have a 1984 with a 22R. I will still see if I can find anything.

I wasn't able to find anything showing a vaccum T or otherwise on a 22R, curse Toyota, they destroyed Toyodiy.com.

Doh! Appreciate you taking the time to look though. Think we had a little miscommunication as to what part I am talking about. As a non toyota guy, I would call it a Thermo Actuated Vacuum Solenoid. Toyota seems to reference it as a BVSV. The 1985 PDF Manual shows it on page 117. There are actually two BVSVs listed. One has 3 ports and sits in the intake. The one I need only has 2 ports and screws into the water passage right by the thermostat.

Im more than a little suprised that HELP! doesn't carry those things. I guess maybe Toyota quit using them and went to EFI controlled solenoids a couple years down the road.

Basically, I am needing to know if this is a dealer only part. Try asking a guy in a regular autoparts store if they have a BVSV. the huh? look on their face is priceless!

Anyway, this is a non emission controlled vehicle here, and the switch seems to only affect evap during cold start. Ill just tee around the BVSV if I can't find one, but any help is definitely appreciated!

Right, I know the one you are talking about now, it sits just behind the coolant temp sender. Years ago when switched my 22R to a Weber carb and Offenhauser intake manifold I either broke mine totally apart or intentionally destroyed it. I only have the threaded end left with a nice big glop of RTV plugging it up. I would imagine that you could only get it at the dealer, but plenty of folks are parting out Toyotas on Ebay and you would have a pretty good shot at getting a used one from them if you send them an email etc..

Thanks! solved my problem for me. Having a threaded end with a nice glob of RTV is more than a suitable solution on this particular job, It was just hard if not impossible for me to determine what effects it would have on the motor, especially with the 4 miles of vac lines on it:spider:Its Carbed So I could tune it either way, but if it doesn't say Weber/Stromburg/Rochester or Holley on it, I'm not too sure how long it could end up taking me.

Again, thanks for all the help!
