85 22re with intermittent starting/stalling issue

Update:

I didn't have the time to keep trying to figure it out, so I broke down and took it to ToyTech in Colorado Springs.

Turns out it was the fuel pump (as a few of you suggested). It wasn't dead, it was dying though. So I was getting some fuel pressure, but not enough to start it. I guess that explains that if I managed to get it started once in awhile, it ran just fine. The tech said I was getting about half the pressure that it needed.

While I was at it I had them do all 4 axle seal rebuilds, and replace the bellcrank that was seized. So my e-brake works finally.

Still getting a check engine light, but no apparent performance issues. I've taken it up to 75 mph and the truck seems to be operating just fine.

Glad to know you got it sorted out. However, here's more info, in case problem recurs....

Good idea to eliminate need for guess work. I installed one on mine here.

...I pulled the cold start injector and cleaned it and tested it, it's working....

When having what seems to be temp-related issue, ALL temp-senders need to be cleaned. Did you do that?

Even if you have perfectly working CSI and CSI timer switch those need a good ground. This is often overlooked. That's through the mounting threads on the block here. Are those threads cleaned to bare, shiny metal?

a permanent fuel pressure gauge has been one of the best additions to my '87. (do not buy the crappy LCE non-liquid filled chinese piece of garbage - buy a liquid-filled gauge instead). eventually installing it helped to get to the bottom of my failing fuel pump saga (i went through nine, 9, fuel pumps in about 1.5 years). made it easy to see that the pumps were failing, even though in some cases they had only been installed for a few weeks.

What was causing your pumps to fail?

the upshot is, there was no definitive answer to that, only that they failed repeatedly. until i put the pressure gauge in, i figured the pumps were fine because i had just replaced them.

i suspect that when the original pump failed, it got a bit chewed up and created a bunch of metal filings that ended up in the pressure lines. even though i replaced the fuel filter and pump sock several times, i think there may have been enough filings in there to wreck each successive pump. i eventually blew out the hard lines and return lines with compressed air, added carb cleaner to them and let them soak, and then blew them out again. since doing the line cleaning over a year ago, i haven't changed a pump. i hope that continues.

prior, i tested wiring. connections were clean, 12 to 13 volts, no abnormally high resistance. i replaced the gas tank prior to any of the failures, so it is and has been clean and free of debris.
