85 - 88 Efi 22re

Hopefully this will be a painless thread.

A friend of mine just wrecked his toyota pick-up which had a 85 carb engine. I plan on using this engine (at least the block and head) as a donor for my 1988 4Runner with a 22RE. This summer the engine will be torn down and completley rebuilt, my question is: can will the 85 engine block and other components "plug in" to the '88 EFI system? I'd like to keep as much of the 1988 parts on the engine as possible, I just needed the block and head to build on.

I'll keep the ECU, pumps, and wiring in so transfering wires shouldn't be to much of a problem. As long as the constuction of the blocks is the same won't the two be the same?

they made 2 different blocks in 85, ones a little taller if im not mistaken, make sure you have the same block and everything else, including fuel injection, will bolt up

Thanks for the info hammerhead, do you know of anyother ways to i.d. the different blocks? Does anyone know if they can be checked for a code or number on them to tell?

I forgot to mention earlier that this engine was originally from an 85 pick-up then transplanted to a 1990 pick-up with a blown 22RE (and they kept the carb).

Hope this dosent mess up any plans...

should be able to look at the 2 blocks and tell the difference

Mker sure the 85 motor has a knock sensor port. I'm not 100% sure where the sensor is or goes I was just warned when I replaced my 22re injected!
