I just bought an 85 4runner (my dream vehicle) Went and put new shoes on the rear. All went back together fine. Now the brakes are so tight the drums barely will go on and then they won't turn once they are on? Any thoughts?

Yes. If you haven't already, you need to dial in the self-adjusting screw. This is done by turning the star-wheel. There is a spring-loaded lever which prevents it from turning in the direction to come together. Depress that lever away from the star-wheel, and turn, turn, turn.
Is the wheel cylinder expanded? Just like you often have to depress the piston on a disc brake caliper, you might need to depress the pistons on the wheel cylinder.
When the drum is installed, it should have some drag, however, turn easily.
As the lining wears down, the self adjusting screw dials out every time you drive in reverse to keep the shoes near the drum wall. When you install new shoes, with the screw already out, it isn't going to fit too well.
