85 runner replacement parts/options?

Hello all!
I have an 85 runner that has around 217,000 miles. I has been all through south America twice and around the states many times. The engine is completely stock and 90% original. I would like to fix it up and keep it in good shape although I do not have a large budget. It has a cracked manifold and totally flattened leaf springs. Anyone know a good place to get leaf springs, and a reasonable type/price for them? Also what are some other good mods to make to the 22re? The off road tires totally killed the power. Is there any way to change the gear ratio or increase the power? I would appreciate any answers. Sorry for the bombardment of questions ;-)

For 22RE performance parts check LCE, DOA, or engnbldr.com

Changing the gear ratio to match the larger tire size is is the proper way. The new ratio depends on the current raio, tire size, etc.

There are many sources for new springs, do you want stock type replacements or something that'll give you some lift?

I have 33" tires now with the stock ratio I was thinking of a 2" to 3" lift would 4.88 gears do the trick? So I guess I would be looking for leaf springs that give 2 or 3 inches of lift.

Looks Nice! No I was mistaken I do have 31" on there. they are the BFG all-terain ta so I guess I will go with 4.56 then :-) I am still real new to all of this so I am trying to find my feet.

Well I went to the auto shop today to talk to him about getting the gears changed. He said that he would not do it. It was a waste of money on a 2.4L. He said it would cost way more then it would help. Does that sound right? I did not think it was an overly complicated thing? He said my best bet would be to take the 31" tires off and go back to the stock 25" I am a little bummed now :-(

WHAT!!! Go somewhere else. My 2.4 turns my 33s with ease with 4:88s. Don't belive him go somewhere else. It IS worth it especially if it is wat YOU want, not the what the shop. Just my 2 cents

hey man, ive got an 86 runner that is sagging like no other in the back. as i has about an inch or less in between my "frame stopper" and the rubber bumper. my leafs were firmly resing on the overload leaf, and had packed down over the years. this is gonna cost you like 150, insted of the 800 without install. at standens springs. 1200 with install. the guy on the web links is really for real. i am going to spend a day and weld it up myself. i cannot express how much i am in gratitude for the people in the community who shared this with my saggy ass runner.. . i urge everyone suffering from a rear end sag to check this out.

(where to get the springs)

Materials:
>angle grinder with cutting disk
>welder (MIG would be easiest, but arc would be sufficient, im gonne use arc) and proficcient knowledge on how to use it...
>some square tubing that would fit inside the spring
>springs, 150 or 200 pounds/inch
>1/2 in plate to have as brackets
>drill
>screw (for spring retainer)
>several jacks
>an ice cold one for a job well done at the end...

i am confused with putting big tires on, the whole gear ratio thing. what exaclty do i have to change and where to get my speedo to act nilcely if i have, say 31s. is there a chart of general rule of thumb as to the ratio? how much am i looking at.?

OK, first off, changing gears to the proper ratio will put the engine back in it's power band and help regain the power lost from switching to taller tires, and get the speedo accurate again too. That's a fact.
How else would I be able to move my 36's with a worn out 22R (that's carbed, not even EFI). By going from stock 4.10 gears to 5.29s, that's how. (4.10's are stock for a 4 cyl/5 spd combo, other ratios come with variations)

Second, do you really need to regear for only 31" tires? Many, many people (my self included) run 33's with stock gears on 4 cyl (22R, 22RE) trucks, and can live with the minor power loss.

Third, do you realize it will cost you $800-1000 to get regeared, and that's with you pulling both diffs and carrying them in, $400-600 more if the shop does that for you ?

Fourth, due to the expense, you only want to go in once. If you ever plan on 33's, gear for them now (although if you regear to 4.56 for the 31's, moving to 33's won't be a major loss in power.)
Also now would be a good to to add a locker if you ever intend to.

So in some ways the shop was right, the expense to regear for only 31" tires may not be the best choice. (Oh, and the stock tires are bigger than 25")

Great reply

WoW 800+ bucks! ok that is a little out of my range. What are some other easy ways to add a little power? Right now I go 0-35 in about 1 min 30 sec. I have a crack in my manifold and am going to fix that. Would it be smart to go with another stock one or look for a better after market header? What about air intakes do they realy make a difference?

wow. i didnt know that it was that much to regear. and for all, the stock tires are 29.1. would going to 31's throw the speedo off too much? because my runner sees as much pavement as it does dirt, the speedo needs to be somewhat accurate. just goes to show how much of a noob i am. thanx for your patience

i have heard som eyammer from a buddy of mine at school of instead of regearing, just recalibrating your speedo. if your engine turns your tires with ease, then cant you just get your speedo recalibrated (if that even exists) for much cheaper? also, i asked my math prof how much switching to 31;s from 29s will throw your speedo off, as he is an avid 4wheeler, and he gave me a good formula for it. for an example, say you were going form 29s to 33s, you would take the size of tire you want to upgrade to (33) and divide it with your curent tire size (29) or the stock size that is meant for the vehicle. you then multiply that product by whatever desired projected speed, and you get your actual speed:

33/29= 1.137931
answer*100=113.79
so therefore, your projected speed on your speedo will be 100, while you are actually travelling 114.

just thought it was worth sharing....

I ran 35" BFG ON 4:10 WITH a 4" lift for years take off was mediocre but id did not take no minute to get to 35 MPH In fact I was probably doing over 70 before hitting the bottom of an onramp. Now uphill I would of course bog down big time like to about 45 needed a running start lol.

I even used 5th on open flat highway and would still do about 75.

It is possible to recal the speedo by changing the sender, IIRC.

That's just a hypothetical example, right? None of mine have ever been able to do 114 MPH.

:D

Yes the difference is a percentage, not a constant. With the stock 4.10 ratio and 33's on my p/u, it was of by 10%, so reading 50 MPH on the speedo was actually 55 MPH, 60 was really 66.

Go for a header, no question.
