I have a '85 old style 4runner with the 22REC engine. I am having problems starting it. I haven't been able to start it for a while now.
First there was a problem with starting as the starter kept running for 30 more seconds after starting. Not a big deal but I guess that needs to be replaced.
Something is draining the battery overnight also as I get maybe 2 tries to start it then the starter won't work. I used to be able to roll start it at that point and be fine for the day. This makes me thing the battery, a 3 year old Optima, and alternator is still good. During my testing the last few weeks I would have it on the charger overnight so was able to get some good attempts at starting before the battery was too weak.
I just replaced the distriburator cap, rotor and plug wires as that hasn't been done is a while. No change.
I then went and checked the fuses again and tried to remove the 80A glow-am1 fuse and it wouldn't come out. I managed to break it and still haven't gotten it out. I think I need to take it into the shop to fix that now. How does that fuse come out?
Also it is leaking/buring oil pretty bad as I was putting in 3 quarts about every 2000 miles. So that should be fixed too if I am keeping this long term.
I am not wanting to put too much money into this truck even though I really like it, so was looking for a cheap fix. Not sure that is available anymore.
I would say it is time for a rebuild, but I have a rebuilt from ATK and the engine is not worth rebuilding. I would rather get a rebuilt long block from DOA Racing, or even Toyota if they do that, and have that put in. That is over $3000 for the engine alone, then there is labor. Not sure I am ready for that as I have many other things to spend money on right now.
Any ideas as to what could be wrong? And how to get that fuse out and replace it?
I may just have to get an old 4 door, 6 cylinder 4wd jeep cherokee to get me running again until I can get this fixed. We need to replace the girlfriend's car anyway and she can have the jeep once my 4runner is working again.
OK I found out how to remove the 80A fusible link. Now I need to go get one. Still probably won't start. Oh well...
