Toyota 4runner woes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a serious issue I need some help with

A little background first. I received an 86 runner 2 years ago that had been sitting for a bit and needed a head. Well rather than mess around with an engine I knew nothing about I purchased another with about 140k on it. It ran great for about a week the started knocking. Tore it down and found number 2 rod oil starved on the crank side. So I rebuilt the old block with all new components.

Now the dang thing wont run at all. I have spark. My crank/cam timing is spot one and I get fuel to the injectors. I have drained the tank and replaced fuel with fresh fuel. The motor will run for a few seconds then die and then wont start again for a while. I have worked with hot rods for many years so I know a lot about cars and engines in general but this has got me to the point of converting the 22re to carbs (by the way aside from carb, manifold and maybe distributor any other things I need to consider?). My brother who is a motorcycle mechanic cant seem to get it going either. I love the truck and probably wont get what i have invested in the new motor if I sold it so I really want to get it going. Anyone have any suggestions? I (and my brother agrees) that its going to be something simplistic but damned if we can figure it out...it aint rocket science!!

Thanks ahead of time for any suggestions!

Are you getting any CEL ( Check Engine Light) codes? Jumper the T1 and Te1 (might be E1 on older models) in the Diagnostic plug and read the flashes on the CEL in the dash board. Might give you a direction to head on the diagnosis.

You say it's getting fuel, but is it getting enough ?
Check the pressure at the fuel rail.

ARe you absolutely sure the timing is correct ?
Always a possibility the TC or distrib could be off a tooth.

am going to check the pressure at the rail and i am sure of crank to cam timing

distributor timing may be off a tad one way or the other but it should still crank up...have tried retarding and advancing byt one to two teeth

oh and no diagnostic check engine light codes aside from the normal

there is some question to the firing order both of the plugs and the injectors: i set the firing order as per the numbers on the top of the cap but it occured to me the cap may be from another vehicle by mistake and just happens to fit as for the injectors 1 & 3 are red/yellow and 3 & 4 are blue...from what i am told thats not criticle but who knows...

check to see if you lined up the timing on the compression stoke or the exhaust stroke.....it could be lined up on crank and cam but might be on different strokes ......meaning valves are opening up at wrong time, yes it does matter which plug goes to which fuel injector, length of wires should be pretty tell tale though and firing order on an 86 22re is 1-3-4-2, also check your mass air flow sensor, vaccuums on top of valve cover, distibutor cap and wires. if you do end up going to carberated, get a set-up off of an 84 or 85 and it will bolt up
