86 hub questions

Recently purchased a 1986 4-Runner. Need to replace the passenger side lockout hub. The end cap with the manual dial is cracked and water has caused some damage to the internal spring snap ring etc. The hubs are Aisin hubs. Wanted to replace the whole thing but don't know what all years are interchangeable with the 86. Also will the hubs work on either side. I have a complete manual on an 85 but is doesn't have that information available.

86 to 95 (pre-Tacoma) hubs will work.

85 and older (solid axle) look the same but won't fit.

Is it OK to use a hub from the left side on the right side? Can you swap them out or do you have R-L hubs?

No, hubs don't care which side they're on, L or R.

I've got an 87 a with manual trans and manual hubs. When I put mine in 4wheel drive she won't go. The t-case shifts fine and the hubs turn fine. She will only roll about 4 or 5 feet forward and backwards. The guy I bought it from said the hubs were going out. Does it sound like the hubs or t-case?????

No, hubs don't care which side they're on, L or R.

Well, they might get emotinally stressed if they've been on the left side for say, 20 years, and suddenly are moved to the right side....

Hmm, I don't understand really, does it drop out of 4wd after 4feets or just locks up? or what...

If the locking hubs are damaged, the 4wd usually doesn't work, or there are some "clicks" notable while drivin' in 4wd...

Could be a bind in your front differential or a CV joint. You might try engaging 4WD without locking the hubs, if you have the same problem, it's before the front axles tie in to the wheels, if it does not, it's probably a hub. Just be careful and go slowly.
