87 4runner needs help

I have an 87 4runner with a 22re. Runs top notch most of the time. Randomly when it decides to piss me off I will get a check engine light and start to sputter and finally die. I can not Rev it up to clear it out. Usually takes half an hour or so before it will start again. I gave it a muffler, distributor, alternator, EGR, and adjusted the idle. I also fun heet through about every other tank. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Best place to start would be to check for CEL codes when it lights up.
It's a simple DIY thing, no code reader needed.
