88 4runner for $1k ?

1988 TOYOTA 4-RUNNER

I just got off the phone with the seller. Truck is straight and clean with the exception of rust on one of the inner fenders. Has the 22RE and a newer 5 speed. New tires and whatever else is in the ad.

Problem is it has 300k on it. Needs a headgasket and/or head.

Is it worth it for a project? It sounds like I could get it for less than a grand, maybe $700 or so.

Opinions?

can you do the mechnical work yourself ?

If not, then I think you are buying a old vehicle and alot of headaches.

At 300K you could be looking at a lot of potential work, unless it hasn't been done already (brakes, starter, alt, etc). Stuff does wear out, but chances are that a lot has already been replaced.
In your neck of the woods used Toys go for a lot more than the erst of the US, so if it's in decent shape it may be worthwhile.

Yea, I can do mechanical work. Debating on whether or not its worth replacing the head gasket or throwing a different engine in it.

It may be irrelevant, the guy was supposed to send some pics last night but never did so may be sold already.

Oh well, there is a 94 4x4 PU with 220k less engine (22re) and tranny for less than a grand. May look at that too. I figure with a good engine and tranny its worth around $3k at least.
