88 DLX Headunit wiring problems

I recently bought an 88 4runner dlx that has no radio in it. the wires are hanging there but the harness has been cut off. i bought a new jvc headunit and tried wiring it up with no luck. first i tried wiring the blue/yellow wire as the constant, the gray wire as the switched, and the brown as the ground which should be right. nothing. i then changed the switched 12v to the red/green wire and the headunit turned on, off and that was it. what the hell is the problem lol. i tried following the wires but they connect into a 2" thick wire loom filled with wiring and lost them. any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Pictures would also help greatly, as I could probably tell you whats wrong a lot easier that way.
