88 Miles with the light on

I always knew my fuel guage was conservative but I've now driven 88 miles since the light came on. I typically fill it up (topping at about 11 gallons) shortly after the light comes on but i was in a situation where I could not but I was wondering if anyone else can do this. By the way mines a 2000 limited, 174,500.

Your light is coming on and it only takes 11 gallons? You have an 18 gallon tank. The gauges in these things are notoriously inaccurate.

Yup. Mine comes on after only 13.5 gallons have been used. I usually fill up between 13.5 and 14. So yeah, the light is a little early to the ball. I've gone 50 or 60 miles past that, but I've never put more than 16 in mine.

you are a brave man haha. I usually go no more than 20-30 miles with the light on. sometimes more but i try not to. my gas gauge has always been pretty accurate. if i go say 30 miles with the light on, i usually fill up with around 17.5 gal

yes,the tank is 18 gallons but there's a gallon or two that can't be used sine the pump doesn't sit on the bottom of the tank. Most owners fill (meaning not more than one or two clicks,anything more and your probably overfilling the tank which is going to damage the evaporative vapor system) up with 15-16 gallons is typical with some more some less. I've pushed mine a couple times and the most I've filled up with is about 16.5 gallons but it's more likely to be around 15.5.

My light has never come on. I've driven down almost to E, and nothing. Don't know if my sensor is broken or what, so I just fill up whenever I get a little under 1/4...

Yes we were in a tight spot and I didnt have much of a choice I couldnt leave my buddy alone back in the mountians even I had to risk running out of gas. I'm half tempted to run it dry and see how many I can go over with the light on while carrying some extra gas to get me town, but I'll probably fill up today assuming I make it to the gas station (abut 7 miles away).

I'm kinda thinking about it... and just carry a couple gallons in the back because I dont live very far from town. I had always typcally filled up shortly after the light came on giving me a trip of about 220 miles. I had a '97 that would get 310 to a tank so I think i might run it dry, unless you think it will damage some in the vehicle?

The fuel pump can get damaged but thats about it

11 gallons when the light comes on?!?! I fill mine up when my gauge hits 1/4 left and it's usually at least 13 gallons if not 14.

Yeahh sometimes I'll squeeze 12 gallons in it when the ligh comes on, but i always knew there was another 4-5 gallons in it, I just never tested it untill now
