88 v6 cold air question

Hey folks,

I'm new to the community and just purchased an 88 4runner. It's a v6 which I know it isn't ideal but it's been in the family for 24 years. I'd like to get a cold air intake for it since it has no berries. Does anyone have direct experience with the pros and cons of putting one on the 88 v6? Or any 1st gen? Thanks for your time.

Pretty much just a waste of money. Keep your money for maintenance and keep her running good. Fast is just one thing it will never be.

i have a 91 with the v6 in it i actually have a k&n cold air intake on mine. It made it a little more peppy and improved the gas mileage but not by much biggest difference was it mad it sound WAY more throaty from in the cab but i wouldn't take it off for the stock one at any point i mean breathing better is breathing better anyway you look at it and its a good thing

I put a K&N drop in filter instead of dropping money on a "hot" air intake. The stock intake is actually really well designed so that's why I went with the drop-in style. I got better gas mileage in the end...

Thanks for all the input. My biggest concern is loosing power. I've read that they could have negative impacts in some situations. I found a run of the mill kit on eBay that comes with a k&n cone for 89 bucks that I might try out. Any positive benefits would be worth the money. I talked to my uncle (original owner) and he confirmed that it's as slow now as it was 26 years ago.

The drop-in oiled filter? Yes I have heard the "problems" that people run into with them. Its because they over oil them. But I have had mine in for over 10k miles (with offroading involved) and no dirt on the throttle plate or hoses. And for 50 bucks I think its worth it. The thing with a aftermarket intake and cone filter is that it is more prone to suck water if you go offroad. And the plastic tubing gets brittle and cracks because of the heating and cooling associated with engine heat(why the stock tubing is rubber.) But if you want the "tuner intake sound" its up to you.

For power gains (stronger acceleration assuming the engine is in top running condition) you will benefit more with an aftermarket muffler/catalytic converter set up. Its more expensive but it will help and sound better than the asthmatic stock exhaust and sound.

Have fun, you'll like whatever you do because you did it, that's how I always feel when I modify cars :biggrin1:

Save your money for headers. Best bang for the buck mod for power on the 3.0 imo
