881's and 890's work with stock shocks?

Does the lift require longer shocks or can the stock ones be used? What are the cons of using the stock shocks if they can be used?

yes your gonna need new longer shocks as the stock ones wont work

In that case how does one know what shocks to get front and rear? The OME shocks are a bit spendy! Any less expensive alternatives that offer a nice ride?

i have 890s with stock length bilsteins. works just fine. offroad the suspension travel will be limited by the shocks though.

True!
I ran 890s for years with Bilstein stock length shocks on the back.

The fronts and all about the same length (stock and aftermarket/lifted). You can't go with a longer shock in front because it'll over extend the CVs and they will literally pull apart. This is one reason that "~3 inches is the max lift for the front IFS". You can go higher but you greatly limit the down travel (droop) of the front wheels.

There are cheap alternatives to good shocks (OME, Bilstein) but you get what you pay for. I put on a set of auto store "M" brand shocks. I pulled them off after a couple of weeks. They are so soft that it was dangerous. Spend the money for good parts.

if your going to wheel them hard then no. Even the extended ome ones were too short for me. they still limit the travel. WHen i pulled mine off i was surprised to find the top stud bent from the stress on both shocks
