89 4runner towing?

I have an 89 4runner with a v-6 and an automatic. I'm wondering if I could or should tow my tent trailer weighing 1700lbs?

I wouldn't tow with an A340H without installing an aux transmission cooler and an aftermarket trans temp gauge, but I'm at 5000 feet, too. You might get away with towing stock as long as you don't pull any long steep passes, but definitely disable your overdrive and take it easy.

That doesn't sound very promising. The last thing I want to do is hurt my runner. My 97 tacoma didn't seem to mind towing, it's just not as comfy for the kid in the back seat.

I do it several times a year with my 95. I have a V6 / auto / 4:88's and 33"s. I turn off the overdrive and shift the tranny manually.
Keep an eye on your temp gage... if it starts creeping, slow down.
