89' "Sleepy" build-1uzfe OBDII experiment

well finally going to sit down and make the build tread

It named "Sleepy" cause all of the hours of sleep I have given to this build.

So pick up this 1989 4runner fully optioned all power just no altimeter, not bad milage at 184k. It had all the records and docs and owned by a former Toyota dealer mechanic. He was up front about the suspension needing work and some rust spots, but said everything was sound.

Here is where it gets interesting, deal struck. Thought I was walking a way happy. Go to DMV and hit with 500 in back fees, Then the smog that was suppose to be done was not. Even worse when I took it to smog myself, it failed. Come to find out the head gasket was in need of replacement, even though the records shown it was done recently, had me wondering if PO was a salesman and I been had.

As it turns out, the head gaskets on the 3.0 V6 is a pain to redo, every shop and even a buddy of mines just said it was cheaper to get a rebuild and swap it.

but as luck would have it after weighing my options and looking at other's builds, I figured a swap is going to be a swap and it would be cheaper cause this came along

while the engine bay was open it was a good time to upgrade the brakes. New master cylinder Bigger bore dual diaphragm style

Made space in the engine bay by converting the parking brake

Opened up the back of firewall and transmission tunnel by gently massaging it with a BFH

Freshened up the suspension with OME and all new joints and rods

built hybrid motor mounts using the factory base to keep isolators and box beams to plate for semi solid style. Made it to access bolts for easy removal.

So to keep everything California Legal and Certified had to go find the charcoal canister. Dealership wanted 1K+. This little canister had to match the engine and ecu being the donor motor was a 1995 with OBDII. what a pain

also to keep it smog legal it needed the complete oem exhaust manifold and oem catalytic convertors from an OBDII. So to fit the exhaust manifolds, the 2uz 1995 tundra log style was used, mated them to the Lexus 1uz catalytic convertors.

Bam all buttoned up and stock legal like, also the routing was turned in a little to clear the transmission and tunnel.

swapped out the LS400 oil filter mount to a new SC400 version to gain clearance

Plugged to OEM 4runner battery tray to make space for the 1UZ air box and map sensor

So to keep the A/C and power steering the pulleys were swapped on 1UZ units and 4runner. that way i could use most of the original 4runner A/C hoses

but to do that custom brackets for bot the A/C and power steering had to be made. cut apart a 4runner A/C bracket and welded mounts to the 1UZ motor.

So this was the gap or clearance use. not exactly what a shop would use but hell it was 1" and it gave some play and flex for moving the motor.

So Transmission time, to pass California smog laws the swap has to use oem equipment. The 1UZ USDM never came in a 5sp so the automatic transmission had to be used. A SC400 transmission was selected because of the very so slight gear ratio profile. So to convert the SC400 auto transmission to 4 wheel drive there was an oem option or the 1k inchworm pre runner adaptor option. Since the cost was a factor and there was no guarantee to pass California smog, the oem or low buck option was used. Found a T100 3.4 v6 passenger side drop transfer case and tail housing, mated it to the SC400 transmission. The A340 transmission was used in just about everything Toyota made that time period but there was still some provisions that needed to be made

Freshened up the transmission and cleaned everything up after modifying the output shaft

Got excited and did an OEM transmission pan swap. The T100 3.4 transmission pan had more volume than the SC400 one so swapped them, also notice its high clearance on the passenger side to clear the drive shaft. Only time will tell if it works. kept the SC400 pan incase.

Freshened up the transfer case and mounted the speed sensor. was afraid of leaks so extra silicone. also new seals. added a bracket for good measure

Bonus using the transmission pan from the T100 3.4 v6 was that transmission pan had provision for the front drive shaft being passenger drop transfer case

moved to some wiring to make sure the motor fires and runs before tackling other things like drive shafts and shift linkages and building a transfer case mount.

Wiring is ooh so fun and ....

So had to hunt down some parts, the 1UZ was mostly complete but some parts were parted prior to getting it. Needed to find the correct Mass airflow sensor, correct set of ignitors, air box and coil for the motor. learning experience make sure all the smog legal stuff is there.....

notice the cut wires for the MAF. on a good note the fuel lines routed and should be easy hooked up with the rite fittings.

So this is pretty much what it takes to get the SC400 cluster to work. All wires from ECU label and pulled to the cluster, addition wires made for the harness to get the trip meter working on the harness side and confirmed with the wire diagrams

Looks very good man! I'm sure that engine will be fun.. only concern I would have is it being a bit much for the rest of the drivetrain.

with the ecu size difference between the 4runner and 1uz there was no other place to put it beside below the passenger seat. so that means extending all wires, the biggest pain was extending the wires with the correct colors so it matched a factory lexus LS400 wiring diagram. if you look close, used all oem wires color matched that was cut from a donor harness from local yard
