I have a 1990 toyota 4runner 6cyl with an auto trans. I just bought the vehicle from a family member that has had it since it was new. it was always well maintained and driven easy. It has about 190,000mi. I was driving into town tonight and everything was running and shifting as normal. At about 3,220-3,400 rmp I enabled the O/D button and it promptly, and firmly shifted into od. After about 10 seconds the truck made a slight pop and I lost my forwards gear. It acted exactly like my older chevy when it pops into nuetral. I pulled over and shifted it to park, then reverse nuetral and drive. it shifted into and drove in both forward and reverse with no abnormalities other than now when it is in drive it will not shift out of 1st gear. Even if manualy shifted and either in or out of the etc mode. I am fairly mechanicly inclined and I've rebuilt and owned many older rigs but never a toyota 4runner. I am absolutely baffeld at this point in time. It happend at night and when i got undernieth it had no obvious fluid leaks loose or broken electrical plugs or linkage issues. Does anyone out there have any idea's what this could be short of having the entire trans rebuilt. In my area that job cost about 2500-3000$ and I only paid $700 for the truck. Please reply with any idea's that might cause this problem. Thanks!
