1990 Toyota 4runner 22RE 4 cylinder 5 Speed 4wd, has about 270k miles, transmission rebuilt when previous owner had it. Don't have record of the engine being rebuilt, only have papers as far back as 03. Had cat converter replaced by previous owner. Since I've had it it's had the starter, head gasket, timing chain, guide, water pump, fuel filter and spark plugs replaced. I can't figure out what the knocking noise is. Happens only when the truck is warming up. Engine performance is a bit weak. Any help appreciated!

Wow, that is some serious top end noise, I can't really hear your engine over all that racket it is making.

Have you checked your valve clearance when it is warmed up?

I don't know how to check the valve clearance but I'll look it up. Thanks for the suggestion!

Check valve adjustment or possibly your timing chain.

Timing chain and guide were both replaced before this started. My mechanic went over the work he had done and said it wasn't anything he did. I just don't have the $ to have him properly diagnose this issue.

If money is tight get a Haynes repair manual and do the valve adjustment your self. It is not to hard to do and I bet you have a friend that can help you.
Good luck:)

Thank you for the suggestion. I actually do have that manual. I'll have to see if I have the proper tools and a friend so I don't mess anything up. I'm not too familiar with mechanics but we did change the fuel filter about a month ago.

don't need special tools except the feeler gauge.I do them cold with a 7 and 11.First time the haynes manual said 8 intake and 12 exhaust and it rattled. Then I read on engbldr cam to set them at 7 and 11.worked like a charm. No more rattle!!!
