90K Service V8

I just took the runner to her 85K service, so I asked the quote for the service on 90K, my question is which of the following services are worth it for the car

- $ 139.09 Fuel & Air induction system clean-up Service

- $ 139.09 Power Steering Fluid Exchange Service

- $ 99.10 Brake Fluid Exchange Service

- $ 79.05 Upgrade to Complete Engine Coolant / Anti Freeze Fluid Exchange

- $ 259.15 Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchange

- $ 149.07 LenzSaver Headlight Restoration Service

- $ 509.50 Replace timing belt, inspect drive belts (I know this is mandatory)

- $ 412.20 Dealer Plus Service

$ 1786.31 Total

Please guys, help me to take the better decision about this/

Here is what you should do:

Water pump + timing belt + coolant FLUSH.

Oil Change

The following as necessary:

Engine air filter

Diff Fluids

Cabin Air Filter

Tire Rotation

All other stuff on that list is BS and way overprice for the brake and PS fluid.
 
Definately do the water pump with the timing belt.
You're almost guaranteed that it'll be seeping or leaking from somewhere.
509 for timing belt AND water pump seems to be a pretty good price actually.
Coolant flush I'd pass on. it'll be drained and refilled with the water pump anyway.
air filters are pretty cheap, usually free to install.
for the flushes..... I'm still in the air about them.
Brake fluid flush, yeah it needs to be done every so often. the very nature of brake fluid is such that you want to change it out.

p.s. flushes.... well, iunno.
even new fluid gets dark fairly quickly.

and differential/transfer case oil changes are something that needs to be done, as is the transmission fluid.
if yours is a type t4 trans, it's just a drain and fill, really.
If it's world standard, the refill procedure is re****ed, and to do it the way the manual says to takes a good bit of time.

If you're due for spark plugs, youll want to do them as well.
30k on the regulars and about 100k on the iridiums.
At my place, the price is the same IIRC for a 30/60/90/120k service whether it gets plugs or not.

150 bucks for the lenz saver, no way. you can buy the kit and probably do it yourself 2 or 3 times for that much money

good list, but while you're in there don't forget the thermostat and cam seals

So he's at 85k miles, he's going to be at the point of recommended replacement in 5k miles....exactly how long do you think it will take him to get to that point? Why not get the quote before it has to be done so he can be prepared?

Not everybody lives paycheck to paycheck where it requires putting off very important maintenance so that they can buy more christmas gifts.

Once again you put up a useless post that has no place on this board.

To the OP:

Belt, Tensioner, spark plugs, and water pump are required maintenance that can't be skipped.
The brake fluid, diff, and transmission are highly recommended.

If your tbelt goes, so does your motor as these are interference type.

Wow. Somebody just got owned.

OP what year is your 4R? If your looking to save money you can take it to an independent mechanic and have him inspect the belt. Toyota was originally planning on 120k or 5yr service lives on these things but switched to 90k due to water pump.

I know people who have gone 10+ years without issue. One went 310k. Not recommended but the oem is incredible quality.

If your going to do the trans do it right and get a complete fluid exchange. Not a flush and not a pan drop. You'll be goo another 100k
 
If your 4runner is doing OK, then i would just open the Maintenance Schedule booklet and do what is printed in there. I would hand this schedule to your service advisor...and ask him to do what TOYOTA wrote, no more, no less.

agreed.

i try to be more sensitive to people's ability to spend money on expenses like a car... but honestly, if you're putting off standard maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer cuz you "think" it's not necessary or interpret the schedule as toyota's way of shaving additional $s off your holiday turkey... what the heck are you driving a gas guzzling suv that costs $40K msrp?

heed the factory service schedule

it keeps both you and the dealership accountable to YOUR vehicle. keep it simple stupid (KISS). :D

Read it again.

He asked for the quote for the service on 90K, he didn't have it done yet. He's doing his due diligence here by getting opinion s on what should be done vs. what his dealership wants to do. That is smart forethought.

MikesToy < :rockthrow: > Sporin. I know he hasn't got it done b/c he took the 4Runner to her 85K service (whatever that covers :confused:). This is where i ask "Why didn't he wait 'til he gets 90K miles then DO what we here at t4r.org recommends vs what the dealer wants.

We do the diffs and transfer case as well.
