That being said, quoting 225s and 235s isn't enough when you're trying to tell us what size metric tires you are running. That is simply the width in mm (and yes, wider tires will affect mileage slightly due to increased friction and weight), but so that we know the diameter of the tire, you must tell us the other number as well 65, 70, 75... whatever the case may be. That number is the height of the sidewall, in percentage of the width.
Ah yes, I typically expect a 4runner to use 75 series on a 15 inch rim(e.g. 235/75/15 is what I use). I wouldn't dream of putting low profile tires on a 4x4 like 70 or 65 or 60 series (or god forbid 50 series)...but I suppose some people do.:bash:
Okay, 16s on a runner I understand but you would probably want a 70 series so the overall height would be the same.
Your first paragraph states a correct fact for certain situations. If your vehicle came with 31s from the factory and you put on the smaller tires (ex. 235/75/15) but did not change your gearing (and or odometer gear) to adjust for the difference in tire height then your odometer would show you going further than before even though you may be traveling the exact same distance.
Going from smaller tires (stock from the factory) to larger aftermarket tires would have the opposite effect. You could go the same distance but your odometer would show you as traveling less distance due to the larger tire size. This is of course provided that you did not change the gearing or speedo gear to adjust for the larger tires.
With rare exceptions taller or wider tires rob your power through more rotating mass and more rolling resistance.
I just put some new 235s (there I go again...235/75/15s) on stock aluminum rims on the runner. My mileage went down slightly and I can really notice an increase in rolling resistance. The old tires were LTs (light truck) and the new ones are P rated (passenger). The old ones could be inflated to 50psi which made them hard as a rock but really increased my ability to coast significant distances (low rolling resistance due in part to high air pressure). The new tires do not coast like the old ones in part due to the fact that I can only air them up to 35psi.
Of course every tire has a different rolling resistance due to tread, construction, rubber compound etc. However, I was physically able to tell a difference after driving for one week because there were hills on my way home where I used to be able to coast a specified distance and I can no longer make the same distance even though I've attempted to do so on more than several occasions.
Note: last set I just removed were 235/75/15LTs (les schwab), new set are 235/75/15P (les schwab). The old ones weren't worn out...just on steel rims and I wanted aluminum rims.
