91 4Runner gas mileage?

I consistently get 20mpg. It's a stick and has 235s pumped up to 50psi. I don't rev it out either and do alot of coasting to a stop and coasting down hills. Been getting 280-300 out of a tank of fuel which is almost always right at 14gallons to fillup. Been checking the fuel mileage since 2000 when I got the rig.
Apparently this is quite a rarity. Keep the tires small and aired up all the way. Also drive like a grampa.

PS When I had 225s on it it got even better fuel mileage. 31s will KILL your mileage.


Oh yes, it is a 1990 v6 5spd that came stock with 225s. I obviously don't "wheel" it at all.

You are compensating for different tire diameters in your calculations for mileage right? I'm sure you know, but with smaller diameter tires, it's going to "look" like your mileage is better, because your odometer is registering more km's than you're actually driving.

That being said, quoting 225s and 235s isn't enough when you're trying to tell us what size metric tires you are running. That is simply the width in mm (and yes, wider tires will affect mileage slightly due to increased friction and weight), but so that we know the diameter of the tire, you must tell us the other number as well 65, 70, 75... whatever the case may be. That number is the height of the sidewall, in percentage of the width.
 
My 1985 gets 19 to 21 average. Running Mitchlin 31x10.50 LTX M/S on 15x8 aluminum wheels. This is taking into accout the true milage error due to the larger than stock size tire. My odometer reads .9 miles for every one mile traveled.
 
I have a 1995 auto and I'm getting between 17-18 on the highway at 60mph. In town I get about 14-15 with 235's on it.

Ah yes, I typically expect a 4runner to use 75 series on a 15 inch rim(e.g. 235/75/15 is what I use). I wouldn't dream of putting low profile tires on a 4x4 like 70 or 65 or 60 series (or god forbid 50 series)...but I suppose some people do.:bash:
Okay, 16s on a runner I understand but you would probably want a 70 series so the overall height would be the same.

Your first paragraph states a correct fact for certain situations. If your vehicle came with 31s from the factory and you put on the smaller tires (ex. 235/75/15) but did not change your gearing (and or odometer gear) to adjust for the difference in tire height then your odometer would show you going further than before even though you may be traveling the exact same distance.

Going from smaller tires (stock from the factory) to larger aftermarket tires would have the opposite effect. You could go the same distance but your odometer would show you as traveling less distance due to the larger tire size. This is of course provided that you did not change the gearing or speedo gear to adjust for the larger tires.

With rare exceptions taller or wider tires rob your power through more rotating mass and more rolling resistance.

I just put some new 235s (there I go again...235/75/15s) on stock aluminum rims on the runner. My mileage went down slightly and I can really notice an increase in rolling resistance. The old tires were LTs (light truck) and the new ones are P rated (passenger). The old ones could be inflated to 50psi which made them hard as a rock but really increased my ability to coast significant distances (low rolling resistance due in part to high air pressure). The new tires do not coast like the old ones in part due to the fact that I can only air them up to 35psi.
Of course every tire has a different rolling resistance due to tread, construction, rubber compound etc. However, I was physically able to tell a difference after driving for one week because there were hills on my way home where I used to be able to coast a specified distance and I can no longer make the same distance even though I've attempted to do so on more than several occasions.
Note: last set I just removed were 235/75/15LTs (les schwab), new set are 235/75/15P (les schwab). The old ones weren't worn out...just on steel rims and I wanted aluminum rims.
 
My '90 22RE 5 speed gets 22 mpg average. If I keep a steady 65 on highway with summer blend gas and no A/C I can get 24-25 mpg.

I have a 90 V6 Auto that gets 14-16 mpg, by the Odo. I have recently calibrated the speedo with my gps, and found out that an indicated 70 mph is in fact 75 or 76.
The truck came with 225/75 15's and now has 31x10.5, I assume the spped gear was not changed, and the source of the error. The bigger tires cover more ground than indicated. I will use the GPS on a longer run to calibrate the Odo soon.

I expect I may be able to get an actual 18 mpg on the highway, but only data will prove that. I will try to report back soon.

Hi guys..

Stop looking at your gas guage to tell how many mpg you are getting.. or guestimating.

1. Fill up
2. Reset tripometer to zero
2. Drive till maybe a quarter on the gauge
3. Fill up again.
4. Look at tripometer
5. Look at gas reciept.
6. Divide tripometer mileage by gallons that is on your gas receipt and that is the true mpg you are really getting.

This only works if you are using the factory original tire size or if you have had your odometer re-calibrated or re-geared for your current tire size.

You got it right, but there is no need to calibrate via an expensive GPS unit.

Just do the math......

Original tire - 225/75 = 28.3 in. dia. tire
New tire - 31x10.5 = 31 in. dia.
Thus giving the formula:
(31/28.3)-1 = 9.54% larger tire size

For speed calculation:
Current Speed Reading* 1.0954 = Actual Speed Example 70 * 1.0954 = 76.678 which round to 77 mph right in line with your GPS calculation.

Quick & Easy Speed calculation:
Add 10% to current Speed
example 50=55, 60=66, 70=77, 80=88

The same goes for the miles traveled per tank:
Add 0.0954 to miles traveled. or for quick and easy just Add 10%.

As for what you can expect for your actual mpg. Let use the following example:
Based on 16mpg (via gas used and current odometer reading) lets just use a 100mi trip:

100/16 = 6.25 actual gallons used
100*1.0954 = 109.5 miles actually traveled
109.5/6.25 = 17.52 actual mpg.

Your right you have to make adjustments for the tire difference.. mine has 31x10.5 as well.
 
gas mileage

I get about 17 (94 3.0 5spd) w/ 31x10.5 15 mud tires. BUT 17mpg is aHUGE improvment over my 83 Landcruiser 10mpg w/ a top speed of 70 going down hill!

I had a Jeep YJ that at 250km into the tank you had to start looking for a gas stn (approx 155 miles) on a 15 gal tank... talk about bad.. the worst I ever had!

Now at least I get 250km on half a tank and it hasn't even had a tuneup.. yet.. that is tomorrow.
