'92 Runner Newb - Pic heavy

Picked up my "new" runner Thursday evening. Ran it by my mechanic Friday morning. Other than needing the leaking valve covers done, she's in pretty good shape for nearly 264k. The speedometer cable is schizo. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

Blew a little white smoke when cold, but that was 100% cleared up with some Lucas "tune up in a bottle" and an oil change. Going to do a full tune up a little later.

Purchased her fairly dirty with the interior door panels off. Spent most of Friday getting it cleaned and everything installed properly.

Questions....

It has "rear air" from the center console. It turns on, but doesn't blow much at all. Does anyone actually use the rear air or am I just as good removing the entire unit?

Reason is, I want to start fab'ing a new center console with a little more functionality. If I can pick up a spare console to begin the sculpting, I'll get to work on it.

Got rid of my 99 gas guzzling Ram to pick up this 92 gas guzzling runner. Should I be expecting better than 11-12mpg? Any way of improving this?

Also, got reminded from another thread....

Smells like it's running a little rich. Can smell some rich exhaust with the windows down. Could this be the knock and/or O2 sensors?

I didn't really like the wheels on my 4runner. I saw your pics and thought yours looked pretty cool. Then I realized they are the same as mine. Thanks for making me like my wheels lol.

The rear heater doesn't blow much, but it does make a difference when it's actually cold outside. I'd imagine you could take it out fairly easily and either loop the hose there or perhaps in the engine bay (can't remember how they end up to be honest). Since you have a 3VZE, you should expect a little better than 11-12 mpg but I have heard of a wide range of numbers for that motor. Anywheres from 11-20.

I take out the rear heat in all my 4Runner's for the room of dual case's and twin stick. By the way CLEAN 4Runner.

You can alway's take the tow package and rear bumper off to and that will make it level. That's how i did mine.

I wasn't sure if it had the sag. Sometimes I see it, sometimes not.


It came with the rims. Never been a big rim and wheel guy. Wouldn't mind powder coating them.

We're doing the tune up, valve cover gaskets, and manifold gaskets Friday night. We may run some B20 through the fuel lines to clear up the nozzles if they're clogged.

Did the valves and manifold gasket last night plus a tune up. Got a good look at the cam shaft. VERY clean for nearly 270k. Took care of the rough idle. Doesn't blow any white smoke at all anymore. Very pleased. If she gets another 60k, I'll turn it into an off roader and pick up a new daily driver.

i did cold air intake new muffler etc to mine to increase mileage and to be honest thats all your gonna get might get better by changing or cleaning a few things but for the weight vs. power our runners have ur not gonna get a gas sipping 4wd lol.
seeing yours reminds me of when i bought mine all " fresh and baby like" very clean by the way she has been well taken care of
