'93 4 wheel drive not working

I've got a '93 V6 with a manual transmission. When I try to engage the 4 wheel drive, the indicator light does not come on and the front wheels do not spin. I do know that the drive shaft is turning.

Has anyone had this experience, or know where I can start to look to find the problem.

As a separate question, does anyone know what type of freon the 93 uses?

So the drive shaft to the front diff is turning? Do you have locking hubs on this model?

yes the drive shaft to the front diff is turning? They are automatic locking hubs.
 
they are not auto locking hubs, it is called Automatic Disconnecting Differential, or ADD. The hubs are locked all the time and the cv half shafts are disconnected(2wd)/connected(4wd) via a vacuum operated sleeve. do you hear a relay click when putting in 4wd? Otherwise its probably a bad vacuum hose.
 
I don't recall hearing any sort of click. But that sounds like it is probably it, because we've thought there was vacuum leak, we just couldn't figure out where it was at. Do you know if that would affect whether or not the 4 wheel drive light would come on or not .

yes, the actuator has to be engaged for the light to go on. the click i was refering to is the ADD relay, so if you dont hear it you probably have a wiring problem. this is the order the system engages:
1)shift transfer into 4hi which engages front drive shaft
2) Transfer position switch closes ADD relay
3) ADD relay turns on vacuum valves
4) vacuum pressure operates actuator which slides a sleeve to connect the 2 half shafts together and closes an electrical contact, turning on dash 4wd light.
