93 4runner uphill power loss

So i just recently purchased a used 1993 4runner V6 2wd automatic, with only about 118,000 miles on the original engine, and it runs fine around town and the highways, but when encountered with a hill or grade, it has a noticable loss in power, even when i am flooring the gas pedal my mph still gradually decrease until i reach the top of the hill. i just had the catalytic converter replaced so i dont think that is the issue. and also this is while im Drive, not in any lower gears. Is this a common issue with older 4runners? not being able to accerelate up hills? now keep in mind that when im saying hills, i mean like gradual freeway grades, not any steep climbs or anything

These engines are known for being slow but steady. There are a few things you can don. Check your timing. Factory is 10 BTDC but if you advance it to 12-15 you can get a little more power out of it. Make sure you have good oil in the transmission. On the bigger scale, the auto tranny really robs alot of power from the motor, switching to a 5 speed would solve that, or a set of headers is known to wake this motor up.

Most dont like this motor, its really a good motor that will last forever if you treat it right.

any tranny issues? Is it down shifting into 3rd out of O/D? Is your O/D light flashing at all?
